Ratchel Line

If you signal the racheter atop the peak, they'll connect the cogwheel inside the windmill to engage the mile-long rope that slowly ascends, powered by wind. You can imagine the effort saved when using this method, and it allows transport right up to the mountain peaks where most towns situate a windmill or two.   The ratchel line is merely a stout rope, knotted at regular intervals that forms a continuous loop from the windmill to the ground. The rider after signaling, firmly grasps the rope with arms and legs. Some of the regular riders have developed a sitting posture that locks their heels together in a firm lock on the rope that appears quite comfortable.   The racheter is the operator of the windmill transport system and keeps and eye and ear toward the base point, where the rope meets the lowest point of ground. They also handle passing short messages to other connected sites, usually by mirror-signal, shuttered lamps, or pigeon. When more complex messages are requested skilled messengers ascend and operate the lightworks.   Most frequented by scouts, surveyors, messengers and tenders of the mindmill, it is how the lunch meals and waterskins are brought up during the day to the mill workers.   These are considered a very dangerous mode of travel, and usually only millworkers are brave enough to use them. Many a somber tale ends in a disastrous fall from the ratchel line.
