Symaen Character in Haustusmora | World Anvil

Symaen

"More than others, the twin deities that are Symaen tend to be depicted as and celebrated for vastly different reasons in the multitude of regions and cultures of Haustusmora. Those who live in the plains and farmlands celebrate them as the deities of autumn, some revere them as a prime influence of the ebb and flow of the world's waters, others revel and worship them in their dualities as gods and goddesses of illusion, trickery, and in the case of many innamorate, the deities of lovers, dalliances, and hidden passions. Tricksters and those who make their way through the world in the cover of darkness frequently pray for their gift and guile and deceit, and as such, they serve as a patron for assassins and other dark workers from time to time. For these, and many other reasons, the worship of the dual-moons of Haustusmora and the deities that embody them has been marred with numerous conflicts, arguments, and at two distinct points of my recollection, the central point of tension in deadly wars. Or, that's what my memory and research would have me believe, anyway.   Over the years, the twin gods have taken the forms of siblings, lovers (quarreling or not), impish playmates, but all portray them as wisp-like spirits with masks, coalesced moonlight dancing behind porcelain faces, ever-shrouded, ever shifting. It bears mentioning that the masks of Symaen bear a striking resemblance to the 'masks' worn by the small forest spirits we see in the ancient forests in the mountains of Iomaire and in the dense jungles of southern Xezeba. We're unsure how they are connected, but those forest spirits do become more active when at least one of the moons was waned enough for the nights to grow darker. No, I don't think they are dangerous, merely mischievous, much like Symaen themselves. No, unfortunately I do not know why we do not simply name both moons for certain, but I can direct you to books specifically detailing the crushing horrors that befell civilizations that began referring to each moon by a different name, amongst other things. I'm sure that isn't the only reason why those societies ended, but I prefer to be on the safer side of the gods' temperaments.   Is there anything else I can help you with before I return to my research? I can point you in the direction of books on the study of the tides and the calendars based on Symaen's phases, since you seem so interested in them. Maybe an anthropological study of the forest spirits and their clovens and societal parroting of their appearances affecting our shared calendar of holidays for some of the gods? No? Well, don't hesitate to ask for help from any of the other researchers if you need.   Oh, and I would recommend running if a tall lady with red skin and a tail comes rushing up to you asking if you'd like to further the limitations of knowledge. Running quickly, yes. Good day"   -Head Researcher and Arcanist Wuo   The Arcane Collective   Oadrail
