Healing potions
Potions of Healing are the next best way to super naturally heal injuries when magic (druid) and the faithful (cleric) aren't around. While 'Potions of Healing' aren't so common that average farmers can afford them, they are common enough for merchants to sell them and the middle class of a respectable kingdom to have them on hand.
Another boon to adventures is that several different trades and skills can lend a hand in making 'Potions of Healing' (at least low level potions).
Combat Mechanics
- [Bonus action] using a potion of healing on yourself is considered a bonus action
- [Action] using a potion of healing on another willing creature is considered an action
Crafting Potions of Healing
- Brewer's kits can create 'Potions of Healing(1)' with enough herbal material (75gp) to steam and concentrate over time (long rest).
- Herbalism Kit can create 'Greater Potions of Healing(1-3)' with enough herbs (250gp) and time (long rest).
- Alchemists Supplies can further elevate to 'Superior Potions of Healing(4-7),' this requires sufficient material (1250gp) and time (5 long rests).
Foraging for Herbs
Herbs can be foraged after characters have learned the relevant plants/fungi in the biome. Foraging can be done while traveling with an accepted risk of -5 on an initiative role during an encounter and to be found at least 20 feet from any allies (unable to join a formation setup). For any character foraging while traveling they will gain 10gp worth of ingredients per day of travel. A character proficient in medicine, poison, survivalist, or an affinitiy to nature will get 20gp worth of ingredients. This applies for short rests are applied as well. A long rest spent foraging will result in 25gp without proficiency and 50gp with proficiency.Splitting Potions
- Non-Alchemical splitting
Subtract 2 from the potions value than split the remaining number in half. If the number is odd and the PC is splitting between two vials than one vial is one level higher than the other. If it is odd and the PC is taking a swig, they always drink the larger number. "Potions were designed to be drunk as a whole, but still have some of their effects intact if you drink a partial."
- Alchemical splitting
Someone with proficiency in an alchemists tools can split a potion into whatever levels they choose without loss. They need a number of vials to equal the number of potions they would like to make (count parent vial)
