Friendshroom Item in Harmony | World Anvil

Friendshroom

Friendshroom is a psychoactive narcotic initially used by law enforcement in the Archonate during interrogations. It is a drug is made from a number of different molds and fungi originally growing in the holding cells of the Landing district. It has since found its way into the black market and to illicit street vendors, becoming one of the more popular recreational drugs among the people in Akroasia and Gardemoor.

The finished drug is a black powder with gleaming specs of white that feels soft and fuzzy to the touch. It is consumed by spreading the powder across the tongue and washing it down with any liquid, usually just spit will suffice.

History

The effects of friendshroom were discovered by an unnamed magister conducting behavioral conditioning experiments on criminal drug abusers and addicts. Said magister found that those with severe addiction would, when kept from their drugs for a long enough period of time, try and induce a high by any means available, whether through self-inflicted bodily harm or consumption of foreign substances. One such addict decided to clean his holding cell using his tongue, in the process coming into contact with multiple areas covered in mold and fungus. A few minutes after, the subject calmed, and would refer to his prisonguards and the magister as his "most beloved friendshrooms." Seemingly in a state of euphoria, the subject became very open to suggestion and would comply with nearly any course of action given that would not put him in direct harm.

The magister went on to take samples of each type of mold within the cell, and tested them individually and in combinations in order to find the perfect blend that would replicate the effect on the test subject. After a couple of months of trial and error testing on the same subject, a duplicable recipe with consistent results was developed, and tests moved on to other subjects. Though dosage and general drug tolerance among different individuals resulted in a need for slight modifications, the effects from one person to the next were practically unchanging.

Friendshroom would soon find its way into interrogation chambers in prisons all across the continent of Gardemoor, and inevitably, it soon also found its way onto black markets. With the drug now being accessible to drug abusers without surveillance, a sinister side effect would show itself. Individuals regularly consuming the drug over longer periods of time could risk falling into a permanent state of psychotic mania in which they would put themselves and others in danger by acting extremely irrationally. This condition would get the name scatterbrain boogery.

Thank you! It's just a fun take on how I have replaced the suggestion spell from D&D in a low magic setting!
