The Gray Island

The Gray Island is one of the main eight islands of Mo'olelo, but it's the only island with no population. People have lived on The Gray Island in the past, but it's very difficult to live there due to regular droughts and a lack of fresh water sources. Most recently, around 100 years ago, a paniolo named Alfonso Garcia ran a cattle ranch on the island. The cattle ranch was eventually discontinued, and the island is now operated by the Fraternal Order of the Wardens, Mo'olelo's military arm.   The Fraternal Order of the Wardens uses the island for military training and target practice, much to the dismay of the local population, specializing in naval military training. Ships are tested for resistance, spells are tested against the ocean and the coastline and various bombs and grenades are tested against the island itself or weaponry is tested using the island as an aimed target. The Mo'olelo Government is currently working to require the Fraternal Order of the Wardens to conduct environmental assessments of the impact of their activities on the island, but it is a slow process. The government doesn't want the island for resettlement, but safe so that any native plants, animals and/or artifacts are preserved.   Prior to the cattle ranch, The Gray Island also served as a penal colony when Mo'olelo replaced the death penalty with exile. At its peak, more than 500 people lived and worked in the penal colony, but conditions were horrendous. Food and water were already scared, and prisoners were sometimes starved as punishment. Only men were sent to the penal colony and they were only sent

Geography

The Gray Island is very flat and dry. It only gets about 20 to 30 inches of rain per year, with no natural rivers, lakes and such. The island's low elevations and its close proximity to The Orange Island and The Pink Island, which receive much more rainfall each year, contribute to the island's arid climate. The only notable natural landmark is the Eastern Caldera located on the eastern side of the island.
