Tiefling

By and large, Tieflings are not a normally occurring race within the Magisterium and are therefore extremely rare. Due to the effect of the Enochian Ward, most planar travel is cut off from Halruaal. Though the wizards under House Blackharbour seem to have ways around this. Touched by the lower planes, Tieflings are humanoids with the features and powers of Fiends and an innate ability to speak the Blackspeech (a mystical and mentally taxing combination of infernal and abyssal). Shunned and feared by most other races outside of the Isles De'L'Est, Tieflings have a hard existence in Halruaal, but usually gain patronage by the wizards of House Blackharbour.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Teiflings are humanoids (usually humans) touched by the power of the lower planes.  Their features as consequence show the touch fiendish powers.  This usually appears as red tinged skin, ram-like horns emerging from the individuals forehead, and a tail, though any number of features could exist.  Some Teiflings have been born with goat-legs, red, or six fingers on their hands.  No two Teiflings are ever the same.

Biological Traits

Teiflings have the following traits:
  • Ability Score Increase: Your Intelligence increases by 1, and your Charisma increases by 2.
  • Size: You are a medium creature
  • Speed: Your base speed is 30 ft.
  • Darkvision: You can see in dim light within 60ft as if it were bright light, and darkness as if it were dim light. You can't discern color in the darkness, only shade of grey.
  • Hellish Resistance: You gain resistance to fire damage and unnaturally hot environments.
  • Infernal Legacy: You know the thaumaturgy cantrip. Once you reach 3rd level, you can cast the hellish rebuke spell once per day as a 2nd-level spell. Once you reach 5th level, you can also cast the darkness spell once per day. Charisma is your spellcasting ability for these spells.
  • Language: You can speak, read, and write Common and Blackspeech (without fear of psychic damage).

Genetics and Reproduction

For whatever reason, Teiflings are sterile and incapable of reproduction, though they have the same anatomy and function of the sex they are born as.

Growth Rate & Stages

Teiflings age in a similar fashion to humans.  They spend the first 16 years of their lives transitioning between infants teenagers. Around 16 the body transitions into adulthood and reaches their prime around 25 years old. Mid age occurs between 25 and 40.  However, they differ from humans in that they transition into senior around 65 and can typical survive to be over 100 (though there are few documented cases of them living much longer than this).

Ecology and Habitats

Like humans, Teiflings can exist nearly everywhere, and due to their resistance to fire are capable of adapting instantly to magic heat of the Sekhemti.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Teiflings have historically been exploited by the wizards under Blackharbour as spies, assassins, and body guards. Their natural sorcererous abilities mark them as suitable combatants and their ability to speak the Blackspeech is incredibly useful in summoning fiendish creatures into Halruaal.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Most Teiflings are closely held and kept within areas controlled by House Blackharbour and the Isle De'L'Est, though some make their way south to the Necobi Desert.

History

After the Age of Ascension, the gods of Halruaal created a supernatural barrier around the world of Halruaal separating it from the rest of the material plane and various planes of existence. The barrier called the Enochian Ward prevented regular and extraplanar travel. Though during the Age of Expansion, for some reason two great Houses of wizards, House Blackharbour and Hanover traveled through the Ward and settled in the Isole Ululant and the Isle De'L'Est.
House Blackharbour in particular specializes in Conjuration magic and for whatever reason apparently can ignore the effect of the Enochian Ward and can summon beings from various lower planes - an act not entirely favored within the Church of the Seven. Through these various dealings the influence of the lower planes have spread out into the world of Halruaal, though admittedly limited to the Isle De'L'Est. Over several generations certain Keildener citizen have been born as Teiflings. Usually they are either abandoned or taken from their birth family by wizards in the noble houses. The nobility and various conjuration wizards train these few Teiflings to use their fiendish magic as spies or attack dogs. Though a few manage to escape this fate by being hidden or sent away by their families.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Many of the other races fear and mistrust Teiflings, especially those who belong to the Church of the Seven. Church Doctrine forbids trafficking with outsiders and false gods, which many people assume is the case when looking upon a Teifling. Oddly though, this outlook is not shared by plain-dwellers and Necobians.
