Beware the Jackalwere

Don't stray far, little cub, from your mothers hand. Lest jackalweres come steal you up and take you from this land.   Close your eyes, avert your gaze from their beguiling stare. Lest you wind up in a haze, deep in the Lamia's lair.
  • Tabaxi rhyme for children
  • Summary

Jackalwere and their Lamia masters are not common across most of Gyrraholm, but in the desert Kingdoms of Alshams Al'ard, they're a known threat. Adults with their wits about them are generally safe from the cowardly minions, but Jackalweres are known to target less capable quarries, specifically children. Lamia rarely do their own bidding, content to laze about in the comfort of their lairs while slaves and riches are obtained by the lowly Jackalweres. The rhyme has become something of a warning to keep Tabaxi cubs vigilant, and though the threat of Lamia and their servants are not every day occurrences, the homeland of the Tabaxi has no shortage of other dangers to be careful of.

    Historical Basis

While not based on a single specific event, the presence of Lamias deep in the desert of Alshams Al'ard and their Jackalwere minions that stalk the outskirts of encampments and villages is a constant danger to unwary settlers. So much so that the rhyme has spread to non-tabaxi settlements, though with some changes in wording.

    Spread

The rhyme has not spread outside of Alshams Al'ard, owing to the fact that Lamias and Jackalweres are generally not found outside the desert Kingdoms. But within the settlements found in the shifting sands, the rhyme has found a footing in multiple different settlements, be it Tabaxi, Avian or even Loxodon. It's often spread amongst children who hear it from their parents (who usually recite it to them in an attempt to scare them into being on their best behaviour, and remaining cautious).
