Eltakyl Delta

The Eltakyl Delta is a collection of smaller and larger islands at the mouth of the river Elta. Mangrove forests cover the shores of the islands, giving some measure of direction in navigating the waterways. Still, the delta is notorious for its ever-changing nature, and many a captain found himself stranded on a sand bank where clear passage was guaranteed not three days earlier.

Geography

The delta comprises much of the south-western part of the peninsula, where it flows into the Gulf of Beralbar. Just past Kommel, the Elta flows into a low plain, giving free way to the water; however, the prevailing southern winds push the sea towards the plain as well, leading to an ever changing coastline with numerous sand banks and shallows. Most of the islands are too small or unstable to house a large population, though the largest island - roughly in the middle of the delta - can support the city of Eltakyl. A large reef just south of the city acts as a natural shore breaker, enabling the Eltakyl harbour as an important trade hub.

Fauna & Flora

Most of the shoreline in the delta is covered with dense mangrove forests. Plantlife is by necessity relatively low, as the wet ground does give much support to the roots. Most of the trees, with the exception of those in the middle of the islands, have built up a resistance to the salt water flowing in from the sea. Dead plants are immediately overtaken by rot and fungus.

Natural Resources

The delta provides little in the way of natural resources, though the waters are replete with fish and the mangroves are home to large numbers of waterfowl. The main benefit of the delta is its location at the end of the river Elta, connecting the Gulf of Mirabar to the inlands of Tamklettur.
