The Season

A time beginning in mid April that lasts until the beginning of November where Registered Hunter from the colony leave into the Wilds to hunt monsters that pray on humans.

History

The first Season was officially held in 1671, 20 years after the first settlement within Borseti. With the number of people that had migrated to live near others that had experienced the same supernatural events, there came a discussion on what to do next. Some of those that had survived their own personal trauma felt the need to help others that may not be so lucky.   A young adult by the name of Jeremiah Saunders made the first pilgrimage during the season. With the snows mostly melted and the roads open, he saddled his horse and headed away from his home to help those that needed it. Fearing the worst, Borseti waited for his return and were relieved that come November 1st Jeremiah returned not only alive and well but with new families to join Borseti. A feast was held the day of his return in his honour and to welcome the new families.   Following the first Season, every year Borseti has sent out hunters to help those that need it and bring home anyone that had lost their own; welcoming other victims somewhere safe to live out their lives.

Participants

Traditionally Registered Hunters leave for the Season; this isn't strict in observance - anyone wishing to participate may and do not have to leave for an entire Season.

Observance

Second Sunday of April through November 1st.   The Saturday night before is called "Saunders Eve" and the Hunters that will be leaving for the Season gather, usually without any family members or loved ones, to reminisce on previous hunts and wish each other luck. Saunders Eve doesn't typically last more than a couple of hours and in the modern age has becomes more of a final meal before leaving with the dawn. This event is subdued, no alcohol is consumed and no parties or celebration; its remembrance for the Hunters that have gone on a Season and had yet to return.   November 1st of every year the families of the Hunters that attended a Season host a Feast. They invite all of their neighbours, families and friends over to celebrate their kin returning home.   Should a hunter not return from the Season the family does not attend another Feast. The exterior lights of their home are turned out and the blinds closed, the darkened house is a symbol of loss to the family and any Hunters that were on the same Season pay respects by delivering a plate of food from their own Feasts to the doorstep of the lost Hunter.   On December 1st, the names of the missing Hunters are given placards and are added to the gates list; these Hunters are never considered dead simply "On the Hunt" and expected to return at the end of the next Season. Any families with Hunters still 'on the hunt' celebrate the Feast by bringing a plate of food from another Feast to leave by the entry gates for when their Hunter returns.
