Outdoor Theatre

Purpose / Function

Outdoor staging area to serve as entertainment and for town hall meeting that can accommodate a large number of people at once.

Alterations

Initially an open field that the colony used as a meeting place it has developed over the decades to be more accommodating to modern needs and wants.

Architecture

Wooden privacy fences surround the property proper. A stage is set up at the furthest end from the entrance and above it hangs a large viewing screen for projectors. Main gate entrance is for pedestrians only. Following this is a convenience stand built in the same fashion as the building surrounding it: contemporary wooden cabin.

History

During the initial use of this space was simply an open field that was often maintained. In the early days this field was used as a impromptu gathering place for local events, a place where farmers would hold their flocks or herds or sales or important town notices were posted.
As time progressed the use of the lot became more often a place for the youth and young adults within the town to congregate; no longer used for flocks or herd and town meetings far and few between. The youth of the township sought to improve the lot by keeping the grasses well kept, they brought in lighting and seating so they could be at comfort.
In the 1950s when the urban sprawl of Borseti continued the lot was improved once more, a centre stage added with film screen behind, a fence with entry gate and a cabin build with large kitchen for concessions to be made within as well as a sun and rain net was hung over the lot. No fees were requested for the concessions or for the film or act viewed - most of these were put on by the community at free will.
During the 1990s more improvements were brought into the outdoor theatre, given the cold climate a series of hollowed out cars were introduced for the fall and winter months. These vehicles were donated from the local scrap yard, all mechanical parts removed including the engines. The cars interiors were retrofitted to remove the front seats to be replaced with bench seats. Each car is hooked up to power to the town, plays the audio for the movie in sync with the screen and have built in climate control for the winter months. As well, a large fire pit was installed during this update along will several wooden benches and chairs for the locals to use to socialise whenever a film isn't being played.
