New Brimmingston

"Something dark brews beneath the surface of this sleepy southern paradise, refuge for the displaced of the northern Blight..."

"A small bit of the north, transported to the south."   New Brimmingston was born of northerners, exiled after the Sundering, who decided not to settle in Varuum, instead choosing to head further south. Many did this for religious reasons. Some came south out of disdain for the crown of Wyeth. A small number of residents even came to keep tabs on the arcane casters of Hariel Minuta, simply to make sure a second Sundering never happens.   New Brimmingston is named for a small, ill-fated human city in the North that was decimated by the Sundering, as fiery chunks of the mountain itself impacted within the town and set it ablaze.   The town is unique in that it was established and managed by those of a specific mindset. It was originally the exclusive domain of those who were displaced by the Sundering, rather than exiled in the magic purges that followed. Not happy with the crown’s response to the tragedy, and basically feeling abandoned, the displaced set out on their own, seeking a new home.   The hardy folk of the northern Blight were (and still are) quite resourceful and resilient. They traveled right past Varuum, which was in the middle of civil strife, as the nation was changing hands. They braved the Wastes of Veric, amazingly crossing the desert with minimal losses. Once past the great blasted expanse, they were soon greeted with an amazing sight… the sea. And with that, they knew they found their home.
For many years, the residents of New Brimmingston have lived in isolated peace. They made all attempts to be completely self sufficient, not wanting to trade or even deal with any outside nation or city. Though the population was mostly comprised of peaceful farmers, they also harbored a deep seated resentment for outsiders.   Xenophobia, already infused within their ranks, began to fester and grow as generation after generation helped perpetuate the cycle of isolation. The people of the town believed any outsider, especially those of the “magical races” (elves, dwarves, gnomes, etc), might be the root cause of a predicted, second Sundering (which they long predicted).   The stage was set for the radicalization of the town’s youth. And this opening was eventually exploited, ironically by those who actually were the cause of the Sundering… the Sanguine Order, more recently known as the Lentokki.   Agents of the evil blood mages have infiltrated New Brimmingston, sewing the seeds of violence amongst the youth, who secretly railed against the confines of the town and its reclusive policies. They sought any excuse to branch out and see the world, even if it meant killing mages and others of a magical bent. They had no clue their new "friends," who approached them disguised as a lost tribe of northerners, long displaced by the Sundering, were the actual evil behind the event that forced them from their ancestral home.   The ultimate goal of the Lentokki within New Brimmingston is unknown, however it seems they've won the hearts and minds of a significant portion of the town's populace. This "cell" of sorts could perhaps be mobilized into violent action, targeting the boogeymen of their own imaginations. As they could blend in well amongst the citizens of Hariel Minuta, they may be able to cause significant damage to the country's magical organizations, were they to have the right access.

Demographics

New Brimmingston is almost exclusively populated by humans from the northern blight of Hariel Majour.

Government

The town is run by a council of nine elders, who all have equal votes in any situation.

Defences

New Brimmingston is protected by a citizen army comprised of the entire, rotating adult male population of the town. Each adult male serves as the Protectorate for between two to four years before they are rotated out of the service. However, in times of emergency, all previous soldiers can be mustered to the town's defense.

Industry & Trade

New Brimmingston does not actively trade with any other town, city or nation. They revel in their self sufficiency, and are rather xenophobic towards outsiders. The town maintains all basic services needed for daily life, from bakeries to cobblers and smiths.

Infrastructure

The folk of New Brimmingston live simple lives, and as such, their infrastructure reflects this. They do not have modern water works or sewers. However they do have watermills, windmills and other "classic" devices to make life easier for a self-sufficient community.

Assets

Crops from the field, wood from the nearby forests, and now weapons, born in the fires of New Brimmingston's own forges. Forges that are working overtime as of late.

Guilds and Factions

As a unified community with a common goal, New Brimmingston frowns upon any other organized groups within their borders. Despite this, recently rumors of an underground group of the town's youth, one set upon taking extreme action to "prevent a second Sundering," have cropped up. This alleged, radicalized group has been nicknamed "The Deliverers," and its members supposedly believe that violent action against arcane casters must be taken to ensure the safety of future generations.

History

Founded some 1,500 years ago by the displaced residents of the northern Blight in Hariel Majour. Residents who crossed a continent and a half, braved the Wastes of Veric, and established their own, self-contained community in the "haven" of the far southern edge of Hariel Minuta.

Architecture

Most of the buildings within the town are wood with thatched roofs. However, there are a good number of brick and mortar buildings, predominantly the public works and the smiths' workshops.

Geography

New Brimmingston is located on a verdant plain merely a few hundred miles from the southern edge of The Wastes of Veric. The town's southern edge touches the bay that feeds into the World Sea, however they maintain a minimal seaport.

Natural Resources

Everything needed for daily life can be found within New Brimmingston's borders, as the residents pride themselves on self-sufficiency. Children are raised and trained, knowing from an early age what job they will fulfill as adults. The community adopts an almost communist attitude towards contribution and community.
