A Timeline of Gothenya

"A brief history of the West..."

The great ages of our land, marked by cataclysmic events that reshaped the face of the planet.
"The sands of time flow quick and steady, lost to all but those who accept its arcane demands. We are those who stand against the flow. We are those who sift the sands for truth within the universal. Nevermore will gothenkind suffer from the amnesia of entropy. The Custodial Order remembers..."
  • High Overseer and Master of the Custodial Order, Inlan Orotuss Veligrist II

    Battle 1

    Summary

There are several ages of man, each bringing a new calendar to commemorate its arrival.

    PREHISTORY

200,000 years ago B.D. ("Before Destiny"): The Dawn of Gonthenkind.
  • Approximately 200,000 years ago it is presumed the first humans walked the earth. They were in constant battle with the only other known intelligent species of the era, the thri kreen.
  • 100,000-50,000 years ago B.D.: The assumed date of the arrival of Mount Celene.
  • It is said to have descended from the heavens as "Godshome," though its true origins lie not in the Outer Planes or the 7 Heavens, but rather in the far reaches of the material plane itself. In the void space beyond the very stars.
  • The holy mountain disgorged its first-wave sentries, the "titans" known as giantkin and dragonkin.
  • While the titans ruled, man could find no dominion. Finally, the gods dealt with their overreaching minions, decimating their ranks, and thus paved way for the dominion of man.
  • The ahistorical "Pre-Destiny" era ends with the rise and fall of Lumeria, the first civilization of man (known only from its architectural ruins), one which found them in constant combat with both Giantkin and Draconian forces. Only traces of this "civilization before civilization" exist, and most are closely guarded by the Custodians.
  • Lumeria is said to have spread across both Hariel (Majour and Minuta) and Golthein. The Lumerian "age" (though its specific dates are hard to quantify) is known as the "Age of Legends." It's not an official age, and calendars do not represent it, but most Gothenkind are familiar enough with its existence, if only because of the fables and bedtime stories told to children of most races.
  •

    THE AGE OF DESTINY

40,000 years ago (approx), 38,500 D.E. ("Destiny Era"): The dawn of civilization and the will of the gods over man.
  • In this age, the lords of Celene wrought influence over the world by invading the literal dreams of men. Though their servants (the races of elves, dwarves and goblinoids) influenced the world through direct means and interactions, dreams provided the gods a perfect conduit for worship.
  • This era marks the first instance of "divine right," paving the way for such entities as the forthcoming Kingdom of Wyeth.
  • 6,000 years ago (approx), 4,500 D.E.: The 1st pilgrimage (of many) to Celene
  • Priests, acolytes and devotees of the gods made the arduous trip to Celene to pay homage to their lords.
  • The Zenithal is established as the predominant pantheon in the west.
  • Soon, magicians and arcanists also began to make the pilgrimage to Celene, hoping to discover the secret behind its font of magical energy.
  • 3,000 years ago, 1,558 D.E.: The Kingdom of Wyeth is established.
  • The first king in the west, Markhan Wyeth, is crowned by the "divine right" of the Faith Zenithal.
  • A multitude of neighboring farming "states" unifies under a king of their own, and the Monarchy of Nerithar is born.
  • Relations between the two nascent kingdoms instantly become strained.
  • 2,600 years ago, 1,200 D.E: "The War for the West" and the fall of the Monarchy of Nerithar.
  • A bloody conflict that spans nearly 100 years finally ends with the dissolution of Nerithar.
  • Nerithar is replaced through the formation of The Freemantle. Though now vassal states to Wyeth, tensions within the farming communities remain high.
  • There will be several attempts from members of the Freemantle to usurp the crown and/or break away from Wyethian rule.
  • 1,600 years ago, 156 D.E.: The Sundering.
  • Ongoing conflicts between the Faith and the (heretical) Arcane Blood Mages culminate in an epic battle which rocks the very foundation of the holy mountain itself.
  • The gods are affected in disparate and (mostly) unknown ways. They are either pinned down, knocked into a long unconsciousness, or possibly killed. In any case, they no longer consciously commune with man.
  • Both Chronos and Krytuss are woken from their sleep and escape the holy mountain before the interior traps all other gods.
  • The death of several gods is confirmed, including Krytuss’ brother, Syggos.
  • Those of faith, in communion, now only receive the bizarre "dreams" of their sleeping/comatose gods. They are forced to retrain themselves on how to interpret and utilize the divine (magic) boons flowing from their patron deities.
  • The Sundering is followed by 200 years of chaos, thus eventually ending the Age of Destiny, and ushering in The Age of Will, founded upon the dominion of mortals and the glory of the kingdom of Wyeth.
  • The blood mages are expelled from the north, along with a great many (unrelated) arcane casters.
  • The grand "arcane exodus" begins. The nation of Varuum is established for refugees in Hariel Minuta.
  •

    THE AGE OF WILL

1 A.W. ("Age of Will"): The Reformation. A new calendar is employed by the latest Wyethian King, “the heretic” Jorson Wyeth.
  • The Faith Zenithal is stripped of the majority of its power over the realm, allowing Jorson Wyeth to rule free of religious interference.
  • 200 A.W.: The establishment of Lentokk in the east, 200 years after the exodus of the blood mages.
  • The (originally) peaceful lands of Lentokk are invaded and subjugated by the Blood Mages, who resettle the land and even claim its name.
  • Almost immediately, the newly anointed "Lentokki God Kings" set about planning the retaking of the west. This obsession will occupy them for over a thousand years.
  • 1220 A.W.: The Freemantle disrupts the rule of Wyeth and the first non-Wyeth king breaks the bloodline of kings that lasted thousands of years. Hariel Majour falls into dark times.
  • In a violent coup, Sedric Halbion seizes the crown, breaking the Wyethian line of succession.
  • Sedric is succeeded by Palant Halbion, who rules as the usurper king until the Restoration.
  • 1328 A.W.: The Restoration of the Crown and the return of the Wyethian Kings:
  • 1st Jothen Wyeth (“The Valid”)
  • 2nd Malisor Wyeth (“The Benevolent”)
  • 3rd and current Clarent Wyeth (“The Young”). He will be contested by a Lentokki sympathizer queen who is also backed by the Baron Rocha.
  • The majority of the Halbion lineage is destroyed, with (allegedly) only Palant Halbion's great granddaughter, Essendra Halbion, escaping the purges.
  • 1355 A.W.: First rumors of Lentokki resurgence begin to circulate in the west.
  • This comes on the heels of further rumors of disquiet within the Freemantle.
  • The The Barony of Rocha begins to build up its army. Is this merely a coincidence?
  • 1442 A.W.: Now...

    Spread

The general history of our world is known and accepted by most cultures across the face of the globe, from the west to the far east of Golthien.
