The planet Golarion orbits a yellow sun in the far reaches of the Material Plane. Third of eleven in orbit, this blue planet contains vast oceans and lush green lands, the perfect environment for countless cultures to thrive. Indeed, Golarion is the most populous planet in its solar system Golarion's crater-scarred moon, Somal, fills its night sky, and its nearest planetary neighbors, Castrovel the Green World and Akiton the Red Planet (second and fourth from the sun, respectively), are easily visible as colored stars.   Due to its innately hospitable and life-sustaining environment compared to other worlds, presumably the work of the gods, astronomers sometimes refer to Golarion as "the Child". Astronomers on other planets, however, often refer to Golarion as "the Cage" in reference to its cosmic role as the prison of the mad god Rovagug, who lies bound at the world's core.   In recent years, Golarion has experienced rapid changes in both culture and technology. In the year 4753 AR steam powered technology was invented by the people of Alkenstar and rapidly spread across Golarion. Many nations happily accepted this change, while others were skeptical and a few outright rejected it and called it heresy. These nations became known as "Traditionalists", while those who embraced this new and wondrous technology were called "Visionaries". For hundreds of years a majority of nations around Golarion were Visionaries, and the Traditionalists who rejected the rise in the standard of living brought about by this "steampunk" era were often ridiculed for their stubbornness to accept change. Despite this, nations remained relatively at peace and no serious conflicts arose. However, in 5412 AR, steam powered machines gradually changed into diesel powered machines with the discovery of fossil fuels in Andoran and Alkenstar. This new energy sourced proved to be more powerful than steam, but also more damaging to the environment where it was present. As a result, a great number Visionary nations rejected the upgrade, and a few others became Traditionalists. Tensions rose between Traditionalists and Visionaries as the former insisted that this new technology would be the downfall of mankind both figuratively and literally and the latter stated that it was simply progress, and that to resist progress it to delay the inevitable.
