Tamorins (Tah-More-an)
Tamorins, even with the natural stoop of their stance, tower over most other species; none more so than the Kin. Often judged by their appearance Tamorins are often feared by other species and have come to rely on the Kins natural gregariousness to soften their own intimidating appearance.
Many species find Tamorins to resemble an ancient natural predator of their species, and most respond with fear. The first species the Tamorins encountered gave a false sense of acceptance in the universe as the Kin has nothing but curiosity about the alien refugees brought to their world.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Tamorins are a homeostatic species that prefers warm climates. They have a symmetrical set of arms, hands, legs, feat and wings as well as a semi-prehensile tail with a spade shaped tip. both hands sport three fingers and one thumb; each of them has four knuckles and is capped with a talon. Their feet are similarly structured with three taloned toes in the front and one off their tapered heel, their feet resembling avian species.
Their wings are large and leathery, resembling Terran Bats in shape and appearance. Average wingspans tend to be within four to five meters. Their hollow bones keep their bodies light enough to allow for flight in mid to high density atmospheres. When attempting such feats in low density atmospheres it is often fruitless unless the gravity is particularly low.
Tamorins primarily breath nitrogen and their blood is purple in the visible spectrum.
Genetics and Reproduction
Tamorins have three sexes: females, males and natals. All three sexes are required for reproduction. Natals carry the fertilized eggs for the gestation period while the nest is constructed. The young are laid in the nest while still within their semi solid egg sacks. While in the nest the shells will fully harden and the young will eventually hatch by breaking the shell apart.
Tamorans have stress induced fertility which increases fertility rates from the low teens to as high as 98%; clutch size increases are directly proportional to increases in stress level with a single clutch ranging from one to six eggs. Once hatched the young will still require time to develop before their wings are strong enough to support their bodies. This is the time period in which Tamorin children are carried by the males and females of the species in the pouch that qualifies Tamorins as marsupials.
In modern times the nest is still constructed but typically of soft synthetic materials rather than the more traditional substances that are not native to Therehere.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Tamorins are technically omnivores but their primary source of food has often been insects leading them to have a selective digestion. While Tamorins can consume most forms of protein they have a very low tolerance for sugars which cause an intoxicated state in their species. Fermented alcohols have an even more extreme effect on Tamorins and can easily lead to a coma like state that may result in death.
Additional Information
Facial characteristics
Tamorins have upturned noses that often lie nearly flat to the face, they have broad orbital ridges that shadow what is often mistaken for extremely large eyes when in fact each depression houses three separate eyeballs. From a distance this can give the false impression that Tamorins have three pupils rather than three distinctive sets of eyes.
The width of a Tamorin mouth is another distinguishing feature, their jaws stretches the width of their face and are able to be dislocated to allow the lower jaw to rotate over one hundred and twenty degrees downward. Their teeth are small, numerous and pointed. The shape of their jaw combined with the high points of thier ears give the Tamorin facial structure a slightly spade shape, particularly from a distance.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Tamorins each have three distinctive sets of eyes. Each set perceives a different spectrum, one of which is similar to the Terran eye, one of which views a higher range of UV than the Silvestra eye and the third set views a slightly more IR shifted range than a Kin eye.
Tamorin ears are curved and located high on their skulls, typically they taper to a point. Their ears are not usually able to be moved although they are large enough to capture a great deal of sound. Ear tips are often the highest point of a Tamorin, rising up to sixteen centimeters above the crown of the head.
Civilization and Culture
Naming Traditions
Tamorins enjoy harder sounds they can hiss through their unique teeth.
Common male names include: Danisk, Cord, Misk, Doran, Erdin
Common female names include: Nat, Set, Shar, Din, Tash
Natal common names: Malaise, Ashada, Azakie, Corranda, Rystallka
Family names were mostly lost to the despairing wastes of Madril. Tamorins prefer a second name that names their intended profession such as: Tinker, Watcher, Collector, Matcher, Guide, Speaker, Walker. Later the tradition persisted and was adopted by the Kin.
Major Organizations
Tamorans share their religious beliefs with the Kin, a quad-deficit pantheonic belief system colloquially referred to as “the story”. The pantheon consists of The Wanderer, The Mother, The Father, and The Watcher. The concepts of luck, freedom, exploration and moral responsibility play heavily within the ideological structure of The Story. Although The Story is technically a religion is it only loosely organized.
Every aspect of Therehere's modern day government, education system and infrastructure has been primarily designed by Tamorins. Their analytical and safety oriented approach to life has aided in reducing the fatality rates of the Kin while increasing the number of annual experiments. The United Safety Protocol Board is where most of the large decisions for the Kin, the Tamorins and Therehere are decided.
Beauty Ideals
Tamorins are primarily attracted to their own species, finding the bright UV patterns and large wingspans attractive in their mates. Beauty standards vary by individual and the decade but most commonly Tamorin females are favored for being broad shouldered and well muscled, men for being slim agile and quick and natals for being curvaceous.
Some Tamorins, as with many species, have xenophilia or an attraction to alien species. Tamorins took a very long time to overcome their disgust around xenophilia; one example of just how taboo this particular paraphilia is to them is that marriage between a Tamorin and Kin was only legalized two generation ago.
Gender Ideals
Gender norms might once have been a cultural norm for Tamorins but no one can be sure as the only gender differentiation in modern times is the fact that natals are typically treated more like Kin than a female or male Tamorin. Natals are smaller than their counterparts and given the rarity of their sex it is hard for males and females to overcome their protective instincts even after generations of safety on Therehere.
Tamorins recognize intersex and transgender Kin easily but it took longer for that acceptance to extend to their own species. Again their near extinction lent to a near pathological need to reproduce. Those who fell outside of the gender trinary, did not wish to perform heteronormative sex acts or was not attracted to a standard triad relationship were ostracized to some degree within Tamorin society for generations even on Therehere. The Kin have been working tirelessly to dismantle these perceptions and beliefs, championing diversity and inclusion tirelessly throughout the years.
Relationship Ideals
Many Tamorins favored a tradition three person relationship between a male, female and natal Tamorin. However the efforts of the Kin have payed off over the years and in modern day few Tamorin expect relationships to be so clear cut. This acceptance of more modular and inclusive relationships has been aided by research that shows that male and female Tamorins are often more sexually active than natals who have a hormonal cycle that heavily influences their libidos.
Average Technological Level
Tamorins, who once lost the majority of their knowledge, have advanced dramatically in their technoloigical and scientific understanding. Aided by teh curiosity of the Kin Tamorins have advanced to interstellar travel and begun colonization efforts in tandem with the Kin.
Their understanding of Bio is more limited due to the pervasive fear that the Kin must be kept from the knowledge and practices of genetic engineering.
Magick become a valuable tool for many Tamorins after the tear. Although not all Tamorins are gifted many have become adept at wielding.
Culture and Cultural Heritage
Tamorins lost most of their cultural and social history, leading to a few specific fears and social structures based upon the mistakes of their past. Since their integration with Kin society Tamorins have adopted a nearly pacifistic philosophy, becoming only more protective of the Kin over time.
Most Tamorins suffer from some level of claustrophobia and intense fear of resource mismanagement. The only things Tamorins, as a people, fear more than the reckless usage of resources is the idea of the Kin gaining access to advanced Biological Engineering or Genetic Modification techniques.
Common Taboos
There are three taboos that a Tamorin must never break:
1. Never harm a natal
2. Never let a Kin near biological engineering of any kind
3. Those who suffer the Blue Path must never approach a natal or a Kin
Everything else if forgivable, or at least punishable.
History
Their native planet Madril, a once beautiful planet, was polluted and degraded by ancient Tamorins until the hellscape they had created drove them to near extinction. They were saved by the fickle will of a God and gifted a second chance as a species. Refugees from their own homeworld they were given sanctuary and a new home on Therehere. Over the generations the Kin and the Tamorin have integrated their societies into one culture.
Historical Figures
Dhanisk was the strangest of all the Tamorins. The Only one odd enough to attract the favor of a God.
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
Tamorins protect and adore the Kin who they share a homeworld with.
Conversely the Dhrahwngn and Hobscell cultures are considered repulsive. The Drahwngn's use of mutative and biological agents is both feared and reviled by all Tamorins.
