The Underworld

The final destination for all mortals. Pay your toll to the ferryman Charon. Pass the judgment of Minos. Approach the palace of Hades and dread Persephone, if you dare. And take care to avoid the depths of Tartarus, where monsters and enemies of the gods have an alarming tendency to break free of their chains...   The Underworld is the realm of the dead, presided over by Hades and Persephone.

Geography

The Underworld is a subterranean continent, surrounded by the great waters of Oceanus on all sides save for a small, steep land bridge leading to the world up above; this is known as the Path of Orpheus and is guarded by Kerberos, the three-headed guard dog of Hades. Along the Path of Orpheus is a small grove of pomegranate trees sacred to Persephone and sustained by her magic.   Five rivers flow through the Underworld, but the main one is the Styx, which bisects the continent and divides the near bank, which is liminal space between the living and dead worlds, from the far bank, which is the permanent resting place of the dead (in most cases). Passage across the river is strictly monitored by Charon the Ferryman, who demands two coins of every person who attempts to cross, though he has been known to accept alternative means of payment.   On the far bank of the Styx, the Path of Orpheus continues toward the Judgment Pavilion, where King Minos determines whether a shade will go to Elysium, Asphodel, or Tartarus. Elysium, the northernmost region of the realm, is a pastoral paradise where the most heroic souls live after their deaths. The southernmost region, Tartarus is a harsh, barren wasteland where monsters and the most monstrous of mortal souls are eternally punished. The Plains of Asphodel are both a literal and figurative middle ground between these two extremes. In the heart of Asphodel stands Hades and Persephone's palace.   Beyond the western edge of the main continent are the three Isles of the Blessed. Little is known about these isles, which are only reachable by boat from the shores of Elysium.   The other four rivers of the Underworld are:
  • Kokytos, the river of wailing
  • Acheron, the river of pain
  • Phlegethon, the river of fire; marks the border between Asphodel and Tartarus
  • Lethe, the river of oblivion; marks the border between Asphodel and Elysium

Fauna & Flora

Few living things grow in the Underworld. Exceptions include the pomegranate trees found in Persephone's Grove, the orchards and fields of Elysium, and the gray, tall grass on the Plains of Asphodel. Only one animal species is native to the Underworld; Kerberos is the only known living member of that species.

Natural Resources

The Underworld is rich in precious gems, jewels, and gold, owing to its subterranean nature and Hades' nature as god of wealth.
