The Known World

Stretching from the Tering sea to the shores of the Mandate.

The Known World map
The world is a graveyard and cradle of empires. They rise and fall in a neverending cycle. Eventually, all that remains is their distant memory. The Ye0rbans made us remember them by building structures that still stand today. The Asturians did so by being the people of myths. The last breath of the Asturian Empire - once having the known world under it's heel - left the world in a power vacuum. In the chaotic centuries that followed, several local states rose to prominence, fighting over the dead carcass of an empire. However, none was so successful as the Akkanid Empire. The Akkanids like lightning overrun a huge swath of land and became the dominant power in the west. Even though centralized rule vanished and the emprie was partitioned among it's feuding factions, the Akkanids had and continue to have a great cultural impact on the region. To the east, the Mandate was proclaimed as a successor state to the late Asturian Empire, even though it is in fact not, just modeled after it. Between the Mandate and the Akkanids, the Empire of Yordush stands proudly in the mountains. On the far west, the Diodese have a dynamic and quickly expanding empire.   About thirty years ago, ancient scrolls were found that explained an arcane science involving a common crystal found worldwide. It detailed rituals that would create batteries of pure elemental energy from these crystals. These crystals can be used as tools if warfare, heating, lighting, cooling, even flying. The Order of Crystalsmiths was estabilished to oversee and regulate this new source of power. But cracks are already forming in the Order. The Crystal Madness was a large scale purge of "heretical" members who dealt with knowledge they did not understand, involving fusing living crystals with a person's body. They were contained, but the Order's reputation suffered greatly. More than that, it showed that much less is known about the crystals than preiovusly thought. That thee might be dangers down along the road.   The world is shared by two sentient races, the Humans and the reptilian Hhrar. The two races have a long history of war, peace, trade and everything in between. While it can be said in general that the Hhrar inhabit the southern parts of the known world and the Humans the north, in fact most regions have mixed populations to some degree.   From the writings of the historian Amunato.   On the history of the world - or at least what we know of - it can be deduced that at least seven different ages are to be named. They all have one distinguishing feature only unique to them, and therefore their names are derived from this source.   The first age to be named is that of the Yerbans. They built hundreds of great pieces of architecture, many of which are still part of our world and therefore this age, that is more than three thousands years, is to be referred to as "Architects". The one thousand fifty first year of this age is to be written as such: 1051, Architects. The count of years in this age is 3093 years. Notable events include the building of all Yerban ruins and the migrations of the Hhrar into the Hammer (Caledun) peninsula.   We do not know what happened to the Yerbans. They left behind few written records, not enough to understand their language. The sources from the next age however, claim many things about them. These are often contradictory but nontheless suggest that the Yerbans stopped being a people and civilization receded to the great rivers. Small kingdoms rose on the banks of these rivers. Therefore, this age is to be addressed as "Rivers" or the Age of the River Lords. The years in this age are numbered 1220. Notable events include the population boom in the eastern end of the continent and the birth of the first Hhrarish empires.   Civilization slowly spread during this time along the rivers, coastlines and into the more pleasant inland locations. However, it was also the time when the World Sea was violent making passage very dangerous at best. According to the Hhrarish, their Karakian Empire rose to prominence during this time, mostly in isolation. The name we give to this age is "Storm" and it has 634 years. Notable events include the first contact between the Hhrar of Karakor and Humans and the rise and fall of Tamuldan.   While the Yerbans evidently spread from one end of the known world to the other, it was really another people, the Asturians, who unified it through the means of the sword, trade and faith. Interestingly, sometimes myths and legends are our only sources from this time period. This may be a deliberate act by the Asturians, a great loss of knowedge over the violent centuries ending this period or a sign that there is more to the world we understand right now. Either way, this 2207 year period is marked with "Asturian". Notable events include the Asturian invasion of the known world (obviously) and the building of many awesome pieces of architecture only comparable to what the Yerbans left behind. The "betrayal" of Karakor and the Asturians' colonization attempts.   An exiled general led a band of allied tribes across the harsh western wastes into the dying Western Asturian Empire. Unable to resist the trickster Akkan's armies, the empire collapsed and gave way to a new empire, the Akkanid one. This new empire began a century of unrivaled conquest, reaching as far as the early Mandate's borderlands. The Akkanids even made the Covenant and the Yonnese Empire pay tribute. After a few setbacks, it's borders were estabilished and a cultural revolution swept across the newly unified lands. Centuries later, the empire became decadent and fractured among it's many noble houses. This was the 610 years long "Akkanid" age. Notable events include the signing of the Covenant between Man and Hhrar of the Hammer, the founding of the Mandate and emergence of the slave kingdoms in Jordush.   Three generations ago, the substance known as living crystals once again changed the world. While not too widespread as of know, this piece of technology is sure to shift the world in a new direction. The Order of Crystalsmiths reside over the crystals mining, selling and of course research it's properties. The date today is 89, Current. Notable events include the discovery of living crystals and the crystal madness.
