The Bastard

Divine Gunslinger

The Bastard is an unrelenting force of divine energy, sent from "God". Granted with reincarnation, whenever this entity is killed another vaguely similar replacement will show up later.   One incarnation of the Bastard, the Divine Gunslinger, is different to all previous iterations. He has empathy; he can feel emotions which aren't primarily for boosting performance (such as anger for adrenaline production). Unlike the other incarnations, This Bastard has a sense of self-preservation - he understands he will be reborn when he dies, but knows that he will go back to purely wanting to kill and not caring about dying. So unlike all other Bastards that came before him, who would charge into battle relentless; aiming to complete their objective in the most messy and direct way, the Divine Gunslinger is actively trying to stay alive and strengthen himself, so he can enjoy his time as the person he is in the Merk, even if he is stuck serving his mysterious "higher power" he works for.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

The Bastard possesses unique, intensely bright and saturated yellow divine flames, which can burn through even the strongest of extinguishers.

Special abilities

The divine gunslinger, as his name suggests, wields a "divine battery" powered weapon, which he insists is a gun. The anatomy of this pistol suggests that it should not be able to fire any type of projectile, and upon closer inspection, one may think the gun is breathing.
  • Divine Fire - The Bastard's health, strength, and in some instances; emotions, are all shown through how strong and vibrant his yellow flames are. One burst of this intense energy is found at a cleanly-cut neck, and the other mimics the appearance of a boot on fire. His flames sometimes hint at sentience, and people who study the Bastards believe the flames may also be an entity.
  • Superhuman Reflexes - The Bastard is able to dodge projectiles which are faster than than the human eye. His otherworldly perception has been confirmed by his ability to time bashes with his gun in order to bat away oncoming bullets. His fitness and movement capabilities also appear to be heightened slightly above a strong and fit athlete.
  • Reincarnation - The Bastard can never truly die; some form of him will always return relentlessly to finish a failed job or begin a new one. When the Bastard dies, his spirit hurtles towards either the nearest volunteer to host him, or the nearest "sinful" body. It is unknown what the higher power considers to be sinful. The reincarnation process bursts open the head with divine flames and leaves a perfectly clean cut at the neckline, making the body headless. Unnecessary internal organs are melted in order to create more room to store the divine flames.
  • Bemmyes - Bemmyes are resurrected bodies which previously hosted the bastard prior to death. Incredibly rare and often malevolent, these headless reanimated bodies tend to sustain their life force on anger and hatred alone.

Apparel & Accessories

The Bastard wears spiked pauldrons and faulds with lots of padding beneath. His ominous mask and its artificial halo hides no head behind it - just pure yellow fire. He wears tight padded trousers and a loose top with an undershirt; covered in belts, straps, and holy battery/"fuel" packs.

Specialized Equipment

Despite wielding a gun, its design indicates that it should not be a functional weapon. The Bastard's oversized battery-revolver is fueled by multiple packs attached to his body, with the main one hanging from his right hip. His mask has been reported to look slightly different with each encounter with him.

Employment

  • Arachnis - In-between jobs for the higher power, Eternals will act as a fixer and offer the Bastard jobs which have been approved by his "god."
  • The Conglomerate - In-between jobs for the higher power, the Bastard takes on quick ad high-paying jobs from the Conglomerate.
  • The "Higher Power" - Possibly The Bastard's creator, and an ambiguous force which wishes to smite down all of those who break its unknown code of rules. Despite being believed to be an eternal/god, there are strong theories suggesting the entity is an Ethelon.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Personality

Mindset and personality change from incarnation to incarnation, but the most well-known version of the Bastard, the Divine Gunslinger incarnation, is regarded as a cocky yet careful mercenary. He has shown that he is capable of being reasoned with, although rarely chooses to follow advice or take a peaceful option.
It's a mystery as to what higher-power he serves, and any interrogated incarnations have died from stress long before any information was given up.
