Gale Crystals

Gale crystals are a mysterious mineral with a crystalline structure mined in the Gelum mountains, specifically in the mining town of Thrakas where operations are performed with oversight of the Library. When tested chemically by alchemists it was found that these crystals defied chemical principles and created a crystalline structure from numerous transition metals otherwise only known to be combinable in alloy form, notably osmium, zirconium, and tungsten. Discovered within the last millennium, this rare mineral has defied chemical or magical recreation from alchemists, wizards, and artificers alike. What is known is that trapped within these crystals are essentially threads of the Weave, frozen and given physical form. Essentially, untapped potential magical energy. Through routine experimentation and innovation the Covens found a method to harness the energy of the strange, unnamed crystals. In their raw form, the crystals are inert and unreactive to most mundane forms of catalysts such as a spark, chemical catalysts, or pressure. However, it was found that the influx of energy directed from the Weave itself, or magic, triggers a powerful chain reaction to cause the magical energy to erupt from the crystal...unfortunately for the original researches this was paramount to unleashing the unfettered power of the Weave in a chaotic mess with an substantial investment of magical energy. Eventually it was discovered that much like the chaotic weave itself, the crystals required components to release its power more safely. The first of such components was developed by the genius transmuter,  Magister Archibald Vinish, who managed to condense somatic and verbal components of normal spell casting into a magical circle, adapted purely to control the chaotic mineral, roughly 800 years ago. When restrained and in contact by an object inscribed with the Vinish Equation, officially dubbed by Magister Archibald Vinish, the mineral would release it’s latent power as intense air pressure, powerful still but much more stable than chaotic raw magical power. As the first to properly be able to harness the strange mineral’s power, Magister Archibald Vinish was given the pleasure of naming the mineral by Coeus. He would go to name it after Aleksandra Gale, one of the most infamous sorceresses of the time known for her mastery over elemental wind, rather explosive temper and her spurning of Archibald’s romantic advances. Thus the Gale Crystal was dubbed. According to prominent historians this gesture was not received favorably by Aleksandra.
