Grand Guard
The Grand Guard are the specialized Guards for the Palace. Most of them are born in the Palace and stay there forever. There is a very tight system for retrieving Guards. They are mostly brought in by fellow Guards to keep possibilities of betrayal small.
Most of them work in the grounds protecting the actual building and only a few get to be a personal guard for royalty. It is mostly luck and connections since usually personal Guards are chosen in the first year or two after birth. The gender of the Guard also has to match the gender of the royal child.
There is only one instance in the history of the Grand Guard where this was not the case on both counts.
Structure
The Grand Guard at the highest levels follow the Regnant's orders, but there is a hierarchy.
This hierarchy is based on experience, position, merit and respect earned. The "ranks" are actually just groups that have more or less the same standing based on these points. Each rank is under the command of the one immediately above it and the highest ranks not only pass down orders from the Regnant, but also make sure that it is followed correctly by ALL Guards.
They are the ones who will be blamed if hell brakes loose along with the actual perpetrator because "The young or inexperienced cannot be blamed for not being taught well."
Culture
All members of the Grand Guard leave their family names behind. They are known only by their first name or nickname. Once accepted by the Grand Guard they will be your family and you should no longer look backwards.
Assets
The Grand Guard receive funding to educate their people and to retire their people. This funding is checked by the Regnant to make sure they are using it for it's purpose and not saving up for a rebellion or to enrich only the high ranking.
They have their own estate within the palace where they live and train. It's a massive estate equipped with everything that they could need. Even a manmade lake where they learn swimming and water rescue.
