Crystal Fuel

Crystals are gemstones that have been refined to serve as a magical conduit. They are able to store spells, augment magic casters abilities, provide passive boosts to non-magic users.   Gemstones Gemstones are found in the High Mountain Mines. There are several kinds of gemstones. The most commonly found gemstones are emeralds, followed by opals. Blue sapphire gemstones are the most rare and desirable, and are usually found once every few months. Dwarven miners who discover a small pocket of blue sapphire are given a small bonus and two paid days off.   From Gem to Crystal Gemstones are not automatically crystals. though few mining companies are foolish enough to ignore the high price royal sorcerers will pay for raw blue sapphire. For a gemstone to become a crystal it must be refined through a closely-protected ritual process. The gemstones are placed in a pool of water taken from the inhospitable Hool Marshes. The marsh water eats away at the gemstone, drawing away the natural impurities until the crystal forms a specific prism shape. The more sides the crystal has, the more magic and power it is able to hold.   Crystal Strength The type of gem used does not necessarily equate to the strength of the crystal but over time some commonalities have appeared. Emerald gems tend to form a pyramid, which provide the least amount of power. (This is the shape the average commoner associates with crystals.) Opal gems will usually form an eight-sided octahedron, though they will occasionally form pyramids. Blue sapphire gems are the most rare and are the only gems known to form a 12-sided trapezidon. The size of the crystal does not appear to have any relationship to the shape the crystal takes.   Hummingbird Airships King Scotty has tried to use the crystals to power the Hummingbird airships. Unfortunately, the crystals react poorly to high atmospheric conditions and there's something within the level of the atmosphere that starts eating away at the gem itself causing fractures. The gem is able to be used through its current charge, but is unable to be recharged.
