Celestial Language in Ghosts of Saltmarsh | World Anvil

Celestial

Celestial is the first language of the world and it has great power. Through it, the Gods created the material and elemental planes. The earliest ancestors of every race were taught celestial and communed with their creators. As the nations grew in independence and pride, their reliance on the Gods and their language diminished.   A vulgar, corrupted form of celestial, known as Common slowly spread, maintaining a communal language but loosing the inert power. As the races divided and formed their own nations the Gods shifted focus to the communities that worshiped them.   Celestial has been preserved in sacred temple rituals reserved for the high orders of each deity. While celestial was once included in the common prayers, the practice switched to common or the racial language of the community. the power of the divine is no longer shared through prayer, the common and racial language allows for greater understanding of the divine message. The language is also spoken by some of the Elves, whose longer lifespans and focus on traditions have allowed aspects of the language to linger, though few remember its origin or importance.   The language is found on some religious moments and relics. The most famous example is the celestial gate at the Temple of Ebon Tide. The large blue doors are three stories tall and have a low relief design with repeated symbols of the major gods in the divine pantheon. Made after The Great Schism , the symbol of Pelor radiates from the handles, spreading five feet each way. The Celestial language lines the doorframe, shimmering with specks of purple, blue, and gold divine energy.   Books containing the language are found in private collections and fetch a great sum, more for the ornate calligraphic style and less for the content. The selling of a celestial relic or item is a high profile international event, attracting the interested of the upper echelon of the international community. While the High Clerics of Divine have strongly discouraged this practice, the prestige associated with owning a celestial item cannot be overstated.   Four copies of the original Works of Pelor have survived the tumult of the millennia. One copy is in the Sea Prince Nation, one copy is in Ebrelia, and two are in the Temple of Ebon Tide archives.
