The Yulan-Tai Empire, during its third expansionary phase establishes many colonies on the northern coast of modern Merida, coming into contact with peoples already living in the region.

During the Third Expansionary Phase of the Yulan-Tai Empire, several colonies were established on the northern coast of the Merida. These colonies, initially built as fishing and hunting outposts, expanded rapidly in the later years of the colonization, with major cities that became incredibly wealthy trading with the Volgiers.   It was also during this time that the Yulan-Tai first came into contact with the ancient Mards. The Mards, an isolationist and mistrusting people as a result of centuries of conflict with the Nimerans initially stayed away. However, slaver raids from the Yulan-Tai increased in intensity throughout the period leading to warfare between the two peoples. This bloodshed would come to an end only after the War of Frozen Scales.
