Warforged Species in Getninia | World Anvil

Warforged

A mysterious, dwindling race of servitors, the Warforged are few and far between. Less than 100 have been discovered in the entirety of Galisean recorded history, and even fewer have been discovered still fully operational. It is through these select individuals that knowledge of Warforges has been documented by the rare Kingdom or state they encounter. They are a sentient species, believed to be native to what is now the continent of Galisea. Due to their near-extinction, Warforged do not live amongst themselves, and their level of development is dependent on that of the region they reside in.   Warforged, despite their name, can be found in a variety of social niches and professions. However, their great strength and combat skill, combined with their rarity, makes them sought-after by slavers, mercenary groups, and overzealous rulers of otherwise legitimate societies. They have a reputation for being quite strange, their abilities and unique makeup making them a rarefied sight. Their lack of a home and generally exceptionally sturdy nature means that quite a few take up adventuring at some point in their extremely long lives.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Warforged possess the same basic body type as most other sentient species in Getninia possessing an upright body posture, two legs, two arms, and one head. Warforged have hands with tactile fingers and opposable thumbs, and in at least one case they have opposable big toes as well. On their face they always have two eyes, those are constructed to look more "natural" will have eyes, ears, and a mouth that may or may not serve a function, though most will simply have blank face plates aside from the eyes. Warforged do not have hair perse, but rather some members of the race have vines that grow through cracks in their wooden shells, these vines can be of a variety of lengths, densities and textures such that saying there is a typical pattern is impossible. The exact varieties of plant life making up their bodies are highly individual, but it's been observed that those who've settled in a single area for a significant period seem to bear resemblance to whatever local flora is most common.

Biological Traits

It is unknown how long the warforged live, as no one has lived long enough around one to see it age and die of natural causes. Of the 36 known throughout history, 10 were determined to have been deceased for more than a millennium at their uncovering. Others who are still active report memories of civilizations that have been gone for hundreds, sometimes even thousands of years. However, warforged frequently go into long periods of torpor, becoming unresponsive for several decades at a time before reactivating leaving the exact nature of warforged lifespans something of a mystery.   Being manufactured rather than being born as other sentient beings, warforged tend to be have similar sizes and body types depending upon their "build". All warforged stand roughly around one and seven tenths meters tall, with some variation in headshape, crests, or other ornamentation changing the height of warforged slightly on an individual basis. The secrets of warforged production have long since been lost to time, and thus they are incapable of reproducing themselves. They are therefore often seen as a dying race with the few found being seen as the last survivors. There are however rumors that warforged crafting instructions may be buried in a long forgotten workshop or covered in dust in the corner of an ancient library awaiting rediscovery.   Warforged are unique in that each one was crafted with some purpose in mind, there are three generally accepted common types of warforged however. Juggernauts, who were built for great strength, Explorators, who were built as explorers and scouts, and Envoys who seemingly were constructed to serve as skilled professionals. The skin of warforged is composed of magically reinforced wood. This results in a broad range of skin tones from white birch to nearly black darkwood, though broadly heavier warforged tend to be constructed of darker wood. Each warforged has their own set of glowing eyes that are made unique to each one and can range along almost any color of the rainbow.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Warforged presumably draw their origins in Galisea, as virtually all currently active members of the species live there. Various warforged have been found throughout the continent, ranging as far east as Guandao, as far north as Gorachenya, and as far west as Gallaca. Most have been concentrated north of the Odric mountains, and east of the Jorgan range with full third of the warforged found active living in or near Tiefen. However, other large concentrations of inactive warforged have been scattered throughout the rest of the region.

Average Intelligence

Warforged tend to be reasonably intelligent and are capable of integrating into the social structures of other races, though their extremely limited number means that there is minimal information at best as to how they interact with their own kind. Warforged can perform a wide variety of skills in a manner no worse than members of any other sentient species, and in certain cases beyond those of more mundane biological peers. Of the various subtypes of warforged, the envoy type is the most likely to possess above average intelligence.
