General Summary

Brandon and Adrie question Rob Shakespeare – the prisoner – who claims he was hit on the head after wandering into the house. They rest outside the house to avoid detection, and are confronted by large rats, one of which bites off Wren’s finger. Kothar and the others don’t trust Rob, and attempt to re-bind him, but he escapes, while voices speaking a strange language appear to be nearby. The trio return to Saltmarsh to tend to the wounded Wren, and to search for Tauflin. The next day, they visit a fishmonger near where he was last seen, and confront the proprietor and several “customers”, who appear to also do dirty jobs for Alston Salley, the owner of the local saltern, and a member of the Council. The trio subdues them, and Kothar takes the fishmonger’s son, whom he calls Stephen, back to the Scale and Tail.
