The Thanobium

This monastery and hospital is known as a place of last resort by all. The monks there specialize in a form of grafting that removes any impurities, but at the cost of flesh. Through their study of The Way of the Long Death, they are able to use the patient's own body, and sometimes even soul, to replace afflicted material.
Founded in 1498 by Fegrus Heel, this hospital was the first dedicated sanctuary for monks of the Long Death, a group that had been generally maligned by other orders. It lies in the northern mountains of Lasagne, assuring it doesn't come under too much scrutiny. The monks travel to nearby villages to trade, and search for any individuals that appeared to be close to death's door. Occasionally they kill them in the night, but usually prefer a more controlled observation method. They offer to take people to the monastery to be healed, but always warning them of the high cost. They are frank with their subjects, but some still accepted the offers, desperate for a second chance at life.
Once back at the monastery, a decadent feast is served, and a peaceful night's sleep is always to be found. The monks perform their procedures the next day, pushing the subjects to their limit, unconcerned by the screams to be released from their painful decision. The monks find much to be learned in the death of the affected tissue, the ability of the rest of the body to survive the trauma, the removal of healthy parts of the body, the acceptance of rejection of the tissue, and the recovery of each affected part. They generally do not use anything to reduce pain, and many subjects die on the table. A successful or failed graft each have their own lessons for the monks.
The people who survive usually do well, and some reinforce the notion that a second chance is worth any price. Others are scarred emotionally, and some have severe mental breaks. The monks recognize the value of staying in the public's favor however, and highly regarded individuals are usually treated to much softer techniques, and are put under for the surgery. This has led to the higher classes denouncing the most damaged patients, questioning their honesty and strength of character.
Some afflictions the monks have treated include necrotizing fasciitis, bilious icthyosis, and mummy rot, which requires a soul graft.
