Porticle quill

This quill holds porticle ink, allowing a spell scroll to have extra effects added to it based on the porticle type. The wizard Glainel Seewhild discovered a method of infusing ink with porticle affected tissue from a deer. If the ink is used within six hours of mixing, the resultant writing will display porticle properties. When used on spell scrolls, these effects augment the cast spell.
Glainel closely guarded his discovery while continuing to test different effects of porticle ink. His rival, Bentham Cobblegut eventually hired members of a thieves' guild to steal materials from his workshop. Bentham was able to create his own porticle ink, which he sold to the royal family purely out of spite towards Glainel. The kingdom's wizards were trained in the production and use of the material, eventually exporting it. Glainel, furious over the greedy use of his invention, snuck into the factory and switched porticles from evil planes with porticles from good planes. The next batch of scrolls that went out caused major incidents, in one case killing a diplomat who was supposed to be healed by the scroll. The factory was put under investigation by the royal family, to preempt any accusations against them. They declared two of the employees as the culprits, and had them very publicly and gruesomely put to death. Former customers were pressured into cutting ties with the manufacturers by the clients or government, and eventually the factory was shut down.
The royal family still commissions scrolls from time to time, but most of the wizards have moved on from their employment. A few have shared their secrets, Porticle quills are highly sought after, though usually in the black market.

"Hey, that sounds like a sweet deal, but how do I know that scroll really is infused by the gods? Just as likely it'll kill me, eh?"
