Valessia - Pre-Thaumic History; General cliffnotes
This article loosely follows the timeline of Valessia in the Pre-Thaumic era, with extra notes on the customs of that time.
History:
The first sapient in Valessia were the druids and the spirits. As not all spirits are sapient, and those that are do not care for society, they lived wild and free. Alongside them, with the help from Val and Firstseed, quarterlings evolved. Quarterlings created their own kind and cheerful society within the bounds of what is now known as the Quarterfields. Alongside them lived the dwarves - or rather, the dwarves lived on the north, within the mountain of Great Oghan. These two societies lived alongside in peace, though also with next to no diplomatic relationships. Nearly a millenium and a half ago, humans arrived in Valessia. They came through Great Oghan, led through by the dwarves. The humans were settlers and refugees from their home, Elysium, which lies northern yet of Great Oghan. The humans ventured farther than the quarterlings, and in what is now known as Valvinnia. They founded their cities, and after them the dwarves did the same. A hundred years of living peacefully among them, the three races decided to further their bonds, and so the cities Bradva and Runa were founded, each a multicultural nexus for the budding alliance. Though these started out as small settlements, they were to become much, much larger. For hundreds of years after, the Alliance and society prospered, advances in science and exploration of Valessia had been made. Orks, a naval race from a nearby island nation, have made contact with Runa, though this diplomatic relationship shall not be explored here. With the discovery of Thaum, a change began, though it took several hundred more years to flourish. The Dwarven-Quarterling-Human Alliance was formed, unifying the three races under one flag and goal - to further science. The Alliance Academy was established in Runa. With the progress of thaumic discoveries, twin cities Heart & Soul were also built, both to increase the Alliance territory and to strengthen the bonds between the various races. Not long after, Thaumaturgy became a fully-fledged science, ending the pre-thaumic age. Society: There is one group that had not been mentioned so far - the faechilds. These mortal children of one mortal parent and a spirit were few and far between in the beginnings of the world. There are rare records of faechilds in the early quarterling and dwarven societies, though it was not until humans settled in Valvinnia that they gained more prominence. Faechilds were a rather important part of the early society. Besides orks, who occasionally moved to Runa or even Bradva, faechilds were the only weavers at the time. They were always seen as a blessing upon their community, showered with respect, educated, and grew to be great leaders. As one of their parents was always a spirit, they also had guidance in matters spiritual and magical. They were the only ones who could, without an issue, talk to spirits, and the usefulness of their weaving abilities need not be mentioned. In pursuit of knowledge and enlightenment, faechilds would often take a pilgrimage with their spirit kin, to the very south of Valessia, to Seedforest. This became known as the Pilgrimage, and Green Path, a road leading to Seedforest, is better translated from rečnik as the Green Pilgrimage (Zeliona Puť). It is worth mentioning that the ork outpost, the Soul Duchy, was created as early as 500 BC, though the orks did not come into proper contact with the rest of Valessia until about a hundred years later. This was likely thanks to these very pilgrimages, while the north where Runa was built was largely inaccessible due to the harsh waters around it.
