Portender
Small thaumic measurement devices. They consist of a small thaumic crystal isolated in a glass tub capped with thaumic tubing.
Thaumic crystals are constantly reacting to the aura they’re in. Even the slightest change in it will elicit some sort of reaction within the crystal. This reaction, however, can be very minute and hard to detect. The tubing around the crystal is specialized to detect a certain kind of change, usually then hooked up to a device that displays the results, most commonly a panel of dials.
Portenders are mainly used to monitor the depletion of aura in the world. There are around two hundred pollution-monitoring portenders in all of Valessia, governed by the Academy. South of Soul, these portenders are key to detecting illegal thaumic activity, as even the slightest pollution can be spotted.
Utility
As mentioned, portenders can detect a multitude of changes in the aura. Another common use is for detecting changes in the weather. They can also be used for things such as detecting the number of living beings or spirits in an area, detect shifts and changes in a material, and so on.

Access & Availability
Interestingly, portenders are incredibly light on pollution, thus are one of the few devices easily allowed in the south. They are also highly versatile, although most of the populace lacks the proper know-how to use them. Thaumaturges often have portenders built into their weavers, which they can adjust and use to measure virtually anything.
