The Waters of U'Aphor (oo-AH-for)

At the end of the Dragon War the Magi, led by the Gods themselves, are said to have released a devastating blast of magic to the Dragon's ancestral home, causing their font of power to explode and annihilating the entire continent. All that remains are the myths and legends of the once frightful lands and a small island that still smoulders from a volcano created by the event.

Summary

The story goes that when the world was born from nothing all of nature, from land to see to air, roiled and turmoil knew no bounds. Creation itself brought forth stewards of the world to tame the mighty forces, and to lead the burgeoning life to a sense of order and peace. These were the Dragons with their great duty to the world.   It is said that at the heart of their ancient birthplace a well spring formed giving pure life to the world around it, and bestowed great power and immortality to the Dragons. The myths call it the Font of U'Aphor after what is supposed to be the first Dragon. The Waters of U'Aphor are said to foretell great evil or great good, whispering their portents as they spring from the Font.

Historical Basis

After the Dragon War, many myths and legends came forth as the world tried to reclaim all that had been lost. Though there is some debate on the veracity, the event itself is recorded and it does mention a font of power. Both are often considered allegorical. Some traditionalists believe the story to be fact.   The area where the homeland was said to exist is mostly ocean with uninhabitable, rocky, desolate islands. The largest, Kainga Tarakona, does have a volcano in the center of it which constantly smokes, but there is no evidence that it was formed by anything other than normal geological occurrences. The entirety of the island is difficult to explore, however, and most travelers don't return, having been lost at sea due to the violent and dangerous waters surrounding the island. Those that have returned are either mad, or utterly terrified, speaking of ghostly whispers. Most people consider the island haunted by the ghosts of the dragons that died.   The only evidence ever returned from the Island happened soon after the Dragon War, when a squad of Templars were sent to clean up any left overs. They returned with a broken egg shell, glittering as if made from ice and diamonds. It can be viewed in the Holy Temple of Diasian

In Literature

Many plays and reenactments have come out of the stories of the Dragon War, and the Waters of U'Aphor is no exception. A popular play in Kelestra is titled the same, "Waters of U'Aphor," the heroic tale of the Templar Sir Alicia Gorimar, the dwarven paladin who single handedly climbed to the highest peak and drank from the waters to become one with the gods and protect those that call upon her.   The Font is also referenced in various books and media as a way to express a place of power.

In Art

One of the most famous paintings in the Diasian Temple is the seminal work of Henrik D'ostar, "The Waters Flow Forth," depicting the evil corruption of the waters being cleansed with the light of The Three. The waters form spears that plunge into the hearts of the monstrous Dragons. It is said the inspiration came from an old, old hymn, "Water of Death, Water of Life," and the myth of the Waters of U'Aphor.
