St. Lewin's Red Ale
In addition to the small batches of ale made in people's homes, the Church of Rohze makes a superior red ale known simply as St. Lewin's Red. Unlike most red ales, St. Lewin's Red is a rich scarlet color. This smooth-drinking ale has an aroma that hints of cherries and caramel with an undercurrent of loam. The flavor has a trace of butteriness, rich caramel, and a definitive fruitiness atypical for the style. The brew's popularity is such that most of the common folk in Ganyrfon cannot afford it except on special occasions, and fully half of the production from St. Lewin's Monastery is sold for export out of the Earldom. It's said that half of that goes to the King's cellars.
The recipe has been handed down and refined over generations of brewmaster monks in the monastery. Despite many attempts, no one outside Ganyrfon has been able to replicate St. Lewin's Red's unique fruity flavor. Rumors exist that the monks add a secret ingredient to the mash before fermentation. Supporting this are rumors that, every few years, the brewmaster at St. Lewin's will hire adventurers to guard an expedition deep into the Allasem Mountains. The adventurers are sworn to secrecy and very well paid. Additionally, they must voluntarily submit to a magical compulsion that prevents them from revealing the expedition's details.
