Graffiti Wanderer

(a.k.a. The Unnamed Graffiti Wanderer)

Of the countless explorers throughout history to have left their mark, their feats of persistence and determination being legendary, historical even, with their equally countless and remarkable discoveries, few however, have left such a lasting and significant mark on the land as the Unnamed Wanderer. This individual, whoever they were, left a legacy of “graffiti” in their wake at hundreds of sites all around the Great Ocean Basin, carving the same symbol along with marks that seemingly represent a passage of time at each site; experts remain uncertain and unconvinced as to the significance of the symbol, presumably it is a stylized name or some personal ideogram identifier and marks which presumably represent something akin to “I was here,” with some form of unidentified and unidentifiable date. Employed dating methods have identified the carvings to be 800 to 1,000 years old, from a period long after detailed exploration of the Great Ocean Basin resulted in exceptionally accurate maps of the region; maps surprisingly accurate even by modern satellite telemetry standards.

While this persons name remains unknown in the modern era, their body and soul having long since returned to the sands, their legacy is clear and present for all to see (and touch), and the name given to them is known the world over – Graffiti Wanderer – and has become synonymous with someone who is bored, suffering from wanderlust, and a desire to leave their mark on the world.

In recent years, and if stories are true, for decades before, particularly single-minded youths (of all ages) have taken to visiting these sites and leaving small offerings to the Unnamed Wanderer’s memory; a few intrepid souls going further, attempting to visit all the sites in order, on foot, much as it is presumed the first person who left their mark on those stones so long ago did. A game of sorts has sprung up around this pilgrimage, with strict oversight as to the rules and methods of completion, dictating whom gets their names added to a memorial.
