Laketi

Written by Sierra Brown.

An edible fruit native to the Takri region, and the one staple crop of the land. Laketi serves as a main food source for the colonists and local wildlife.

The most common plant found throughout the region of Takri, laketi are a common food source for wildlife and the people of Takrino. It is a relatively small plant on its own but commonly grows in large groups. While each plant is slow to grow, they are fast to spread once their seeds and fruit are released. Laketi is also the source of a specific poison targeting Humans and Hydari.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Laketi are a very simple plant in appearance, consisting primarily of a layer of crusty, leaflike growths that are extremely fragile when touched. The plants are generally a dull teal in color. Many visitors to the region have compared these growths to lichen, though the two plant species are completely unrelated.

When blooming, the plant sports a tall, slender spike-like flower of dark blue and green colors. Once pollinated, this spike slowly forms into the fruit of the plant - A long, slender, mushy pale-orange fruit covered in a thick and tough dark orange-green peel, that protects the sensitive fruit inside from the environment until eaten.

Genetics and Reproduction

When flowering, the plant's pollen is found not in the flowers, but the frail leaves of the plant. When wildlife steps on these leaves and break them, the pollen is released and clings to them, before eventually falling off and finding its way into the flowers of other laketi.

Growth Rate & Stages

During growing seasons, laketi sprout a singular, tall, slender spike-like flower that eventually turns into a sweet fruit covered in a hardy peel after pollination. Once ripe, this fruit is disconnected from the plant and falls over, and starts emitting a very sweet scent that cuts through the pungent smells of the region's gas emissions. This scent attracts creatures that eat the fruit and spreads its seeds.

Additional Information

Uses, Products & Exploitation

Laketi has become a very commonly grown plant by Drakari throughout the Takri Region. During the fruiting seasons, the fragrance of the fruit is found to be far more pleasant compared to the typical air of the region, and the fruit itself is edible and quite delicious for most. The fruit of the laketi, however, is toxic to both Humans and Hydari, leading to it sometimes being used as a specifically targeted poison. In most cases, however, laketi is grown both for its fragrance and as a food source.

Etymology

The term 'laketi' is a Si Kari approximation of the plant's name in Kata. The original name has no real origin and is generally said to have been a random Matari making random noises and calling that a name for what was, at the time, thought to be a useless weed.
