Streyburg Guard

The Streyburg Guard is the primary law enforcement body in the kingdom of Streyburg. It answers directly to the monarch of Streyburg.

Structure

The Streyburg Guard is divided into several discrete ranks, which fall into the general categories of enlisted and commisioned:

Enlisted

Enlisted guards do much of the actual guarding work in the Streyburg Guard. They must attend a guard academy before being enlisted, where they learn the skills of being a guard and can test their aptitude for the position.
Guards third through first class make up the majority of the Guard. These are the Guardsfolk who do the majority of the actual guarding. They work in pairs with an assigned partner and take shifts standing guard or patrolling the city. Guardsfolk enter the guard usually as third or second class, and progress up to first class with enough demonstrated skill and achievement.
Sergeants in the Guard are responsible for overseeing their unit. They may also take shifts where needed but generally spend more time leading their units and filling out general paperwork.
First or unit sergeants are in charge of three units and their sergeants.

Commissioned

To become a commissioned officer, a guard must attend an officer's academy. They may begin their careers with this academy or, more rarely, come in from the enlisted ranks to earn a commission.
Lieutenants supervise guard sections and each section's first sergeant. They handle more complicated paperwork and make more administrative decisions.
After lieutenant, an officer no longer supervises enlisted guards directly. The progression is captain, major, brigadier, general, and finally the monarch of Streyburg, who is technically the commander of the entire guard force but generally leaves the actual commanding to the general. Each rank has bigger responsibilities and less members, and as such becomes much more difficult to achieve.

Culture

The Streyburg Guard is most trusted amongst the upper class citizens of Streyburg, particularly those from old families with established connections to the Guard. To the working class of Streyburg, however, it is seen more as a tool of oppression by the monarchy. The Guard does not deal with the underlying issues that motivate folk to commit crimes, and is often seen as heavy-handed when it comes to bringing justice to criminals.

Public Agenda

The Streyburg Guard has been charged via the kingdom's constitution with the protection of Streyburg's citizens, in particular its monarch, and with the upholding of Streyburgish laws. It performs these duties with a fervor that can in some cases be frightening.

History

The Streyburg Guard was officially founded with the creation of Streyburg's constitution, which outlines the powers and duties of each part of its government. This constitution was written collaboratively between Ulrich Mossforge, the current king of Streyburg, and a council consisting of guild leaders and a few representatives from the citizens of Streyburg. Before the constitution, the Guard performed similar duties but was not officially under the same obligations to Streyburgish citizens.
