History and Record-Keeping in Galactus

The many cultures of Galactus have various ways of recording their history. Writing was developed first in the Emerald Sea area around BV 825 and spread across to the other continents over time, with the last continent to adopt a writing system being the islands of Krobesh in BV 471. Many racial groups developed their own written languages independently, which has led to the existence of multiple languages stemming from the same source and others having systems completely unlike any others. With the spread of Common across the world over time, all of these groups are able to communicate with one another both orally and through writing.

History was at first an oral tradition; most accounts of major and minor events before the development of writing have taken the form of stories, myths, and legends. These tales are still a prominent method of recording history, but nearly all cultures (with a few exceptions) have adopted the use of a thorough written record of events.

In most major cities, especially capitals, an archive exists which keeps such written records in good condition. These are also used to keep track of citizens and their activities, such as births, deaths, marriages, and crimes. In smaller villages, these are less common due to the resources needed to keep such records. Often, places without the ability or resources to keep records will rely on a larger city to do so for them.

By far the organization which keeps the most meticulous records is the Order of the Jackdaw. Much of their Citadel and its resources is dedicated to the restoration and preservation of any texts and artifacts that the Order can discover or acquire. Although the archives of the Citadel are closed to the general public, academics and political figures can request access to certain sections of the archives for research.
