Antiosas
Antiosas is a resident of Meadowbrook and serves as a priestess and wise woman.
Born in the late winter of 1206, Antiosas lived in the quiet town of Kalios that rested two days outside of the City State of Kalina and spent most of her life in peace. In the Grey Plains, life and death blur in odd ways leading many of the inhabitants to practice various forms of necrolatry and necrocracy. In the lands surrounding Kalina, they practice the religion of Perasma which revers the dead and during the Full Moon of Morta will walk amongst the ghosts and spirits of their ancestors in harmony and peace. Kalios practiced these traditions and Antiosas’s parents soon found that she had a natural talent communicating with the dead.
She spent her teenage years being taught by the town’s best Ieressess, the keepers of the Perasma beliefs, learning everything she could about her religion and how to create a bond with the River of Styx and worlds beyond. Her hard work and talent got her far, for by the time she reached adulthood, she became the Head Ieressess in her town of Kalios. She met her husband, Palios, when she was 32 and soon they were happily married. They had had 5 children together. Their marriage was happy and peaceful, just as the town she had lived in most of her life.
In the year 1242, everything changed.
A mysterious plague barreled through the outer towns, including Kalios, decimating the population wherever it went. Antiosas could do little as she watched the plague take her husband and all her children. Grief stricken, Antiosas isolated herself outside of Kalios and lived-in seclusion for years, only leaving her hermitage during the Full Moon of Morta to return to Kalios to see her husband and children. This continued until she found that she was pregnant, though she had never laid with any man other than her ghostly husband. It was believed to be impossible to be impregnated by a spirit. Believing herself to have done the impossible with her deceased lover, Antiosas was thrilled and moved back to Kalios where her pregnancy was treated as a divine blessing. Once again, however, peace was not meant to last.
Weeks before she was expected to give birth, in the fall of 1252, Kalios lost contact with surrounding villages and towns and anyone sent to investigate never returned. Fearing for the worst, Kalios began preparing for raiders, but it was far too late. The Assembly of Tox, a murderous and psychotic death worshipping cult, led by Kl’ynk Syllcorvnr brought a small hoard of raiders from the east and laid waste to any town without walls. The town's efforts were not completely in vain, however, as the Kalios guard inflicted a heavy death toll on their attackers, but they were inevitably overrun.
As the raiders began slaughtering the inhabitants, Antiosas was cornered by a berserker and several raiders. She was able to slay several of the raiders but was overwhelmed by the berserker’s unrelenting offense. Prone and wounded, the dark champion raised his blade over her womb. Before the dark champion drove his blade down, all went black. She woke up hours later, surrounded by the bodies of her assailants, their faces twisted in unspeakable torment and fear. In her arms, she found a sleeping child, wrapped in a ghostly cloth. Survivors that heard of what happened called it a curse and feared her. After word spread at the birth of the child born in such bloodshed, she was labeled a pariah and was exiled from Kalios.
Once again, Antiosas entered seclusion and raised her daughter, who she named Persephone, isolated from society.
To make Antiosas’s situation worse, several years after her exile, she began developing a condition in which her body slowly began to decompose. Magic stalled the process, but nothing could halt it entirely. Desperate to help her mother live, Persephone convinced her mother to seek aide in the lands west. With little else to lose, they embarked on their journey in the spring of 1269. (TBC)
