Frax Jagged-Maw

Written by 1000colours

Frax is quite different from his goblin brethren, although this is not so obvious at a glance. He is no different in terms of physical appearance, but is exceptionally different in his disposition, as he is thoughtful, kind and a real team-player. This leads to his fellow goblinoids to mercilessly bully him, which has turned him into somewhat of a people pleaser. While the other goblins hatch mischievous schemes and think of new ways to outrank each other, Frax is always coming up with new ways to make his clanmates' lives easier and to also please his chieftain.   Frax's people pleasing tendencies is what got him into his current predicament. The thing is... he's currently trapped within a suit of Arcfordian Locking Armour, and has no way of unlocking it.   One fine day while he was out chasing butterflies and picking berries for his clan, he spotted a delivery wagon that was making a stop to fix a broken axle. Frax wanted to help the poor travelers but figured that his lack of physical strength wouldn't be of much help, and that the armoured guards would most likely attack him on sight, as it had happened many times in the past when he made attempts to help folks. He decided on heading back to his clan's lair, until he saw that tiny glint coming from the covered wagon. It was polished plate armour like he had never seen before! He thought that his chieftain would certainly approve of such a set, so he decided on taking it back... however, with how alert the guards were right now, it was unlikely that he would be able to steal the armour and carry it all back by himself without getting noticed.   As the sun moved through the sky, the guards kept trying to fix their wagon and Frax kept trying to come up with a solution. Feeling that his attempts were futile, he started heading home until he walked past a berry bush. See, Frax became a berry expert from spending all his time gathering, unlike his goblinoid brethren who spent all their time pillaging and stealing. He knew that these berries had relaxing properties, and when mixed with other ingredients, can create a strong fatiguing effect.   It was decided.   He would mix up his Sleepytime Brew and sneak it into the guard's ale supply, wait until they fell asleep, don the armour and carry it all the way home! Sure it would be heavy and will probably give him a permanent spinal injury, but it would certainly make his chieftain happy and would ensure his survival within the clan for many more years to come.   Frax hid in the bushes, patiently awaiting for the all of the guards to fall asleep from their evening brew. Once he was fully confident that none of the guards would wake up any time soon, he climbed into the wagon to don this encumbering suit of armour.   He struggled to drag himself and the armour uphill back to his home, but after an arduous 16 hour journey (one that would usually take Frax 20 minutes) he finally made it back home. His fellow goblins intended to greet him with the routine prank but could only regard him with confusion. They followed him quizzically as he walked to their chieftain's throne, eagerly waiting for how their master would react.   Frax declared to the chieftain that he brought back some armour for him, in which the chieftain was initially very pleased about. Rubbing his hands greedily he went up to Frax to remove the armour so that he could don the gear himself - only to find it would not budge. The chieftain now believed that Frax was trying to pull an ill-thought-out prank on him and flew into a blind rage. Despite Frax's pleas to the contrary, the large hobgoblin pushed over the little goblin and start beating him up - or at least attempted to.   Despite Frax's body burning from exhaustion, every time he was knocked over he would get up again and again, seemingly unharmed, and soon enough the chief's adrenaline wore off and he tired himself out. The other goblins saw Frax as the victor of this "battle" by default and they turned on the hobgoblin, viciously biting his ankles and attacking him with their crudely-made clubs. The former chief barely escaped the clan's lair with his life but vowed that he would find Frax again and destroy him, taking that magic armour for himself.   Since then, Frax has been the chieftain of the Jagged-Maw clan, although not a very good one. Many of the goblins left the clan, as they weren't a big fan of his goals or methods. He never wanted the clan to attack random travelers or raid small settlements, he wanted peaceful trade and to make peaceful relations with local settlements. There just wasn't a lot for a goblin to do under that type of leadership, and any challenges of leadership always end with the challenger passing out from exhaustion. The last dozen goblins who still remained in the clan didn't listen to Frax as a leader, and simply stayed out of convenience... but they all had thoughts about leaving at some point soon.   In the end it didn't matter anyway, because they perished when The Basement Guild arrived and fought them off in self defense. Thankfully the adventurers realised that Frax was no danger to them (mostly because the poor guy couldn't even walk properly in his armour) and decided to talk to him, instead of futilely continuing their barrage. This was when they found out that The Collector was a snake and double-crossed Frax, and had actually made a fair trade for the trinket.   After the adventurers made this discovery, they decided to take the lonely goblin with them on their journey.       Authors note: There are mixed reports whether the goblins attacked first or if the adventurers did, so jury's still out on that one. There's also some questions as to whether the adventurers had taken Frax with them as a new ally or in hopes that they could sell the armour he was wearing - regardless of whether he was in it or not. Personally I wouldn't blame them if they just saw the potential for coin, as Arcfordian Locking Armour can sell for a lot on the market.
