Fynlaw is a campaign setting that blends the familiarity of modernity with the wonder of Fantasy. Technology is mostly analogous to recently modern conveniences in our own world, with a few exceptions to maintain atmosphere. Magic is a force of nature, tapped into and utilized in a variety of ways but capable of acting on its own in the right circumstances. While faith has a place in the world the question of what Gods are and whether they even exist has not been answered.   Fynlaw, and the world that it occupies, is divided between islands of hard-won safety in a sea of nearly unfathomable dangers. Civilization exists in dense pockets, cities and settlements clustered close enough to support each other in times of crisis. In between these pockets are the myriad dangers of the Wilds, vast stretches of unclaimed and untamed land were anything might lurk. Known threats to civilization, from conquering hordes and savage raiders to hungry magic beasts and titanic dragons, are far outnumbered by the unknown ones lurking deep in the Wild. Yet not all is well behind the shielding walls of the cities, for crime and intrigue still plague those who consider themselves civilized.   By far the greatest shield that civilization bears against danger is technology, all based on magically-charged crystalline cores imbedded in spell-inscribed metal plates. Different gemstones store, charge, and discharge their energy in different ways and at different rates. Naturally this leads to each type of crystal being in demand for different types of machinery, from the high-capacity but hard to charge diamond to the nearly useless but highly absorptive jade. The workhorse of this industry is the versatile and humble quartz crystal, which can be recharged quickly and easily. Although most of this core technology is utilized for military machinery, a good amount of the innovations that started as equipment for armies have found a place in the lives of civilians. Vehicles, power generation, telecommunication, and convenient appliances are all part of Fynlaw's everyday life.   Another factor of everyday life are the brave souls who make up Fynlaw's best (and sometimes only) line of defense, the Venture Guild. The Guild itself is a national organization that support and sponsors adventurers that agree to abide by its rules. From Guild-halls across the Federation, these driven folk delve into the unknown of the Wilds and the ruins of what once was Civilization searching for any number of things. Some are mercenary monster-hunters who track down bountied creatures for wealth and glory, others sift through the sands of time and ruin seeking what treasures or knowledge they can, and yet others feel a calling to defend home, people, and country in ways the army cannot. Adventurers are mostly drawn to the fringes of civilization, where the most overt threats might besiege the little towns and the most wild rumors fly.   Welcome to the Guild.
