Hybrid Trains
History
The Flying Scotsman is a steam locomotive that was once used to transport passengers, from London to Edinburgh [3] it was originally used up to the 1960s. This is when the electrification of British rail happened and the technology of train transportation improved.Original History
During The Great Rewind train transportation was lost but as they needed a highspeed mode of transportation and had a rail network across the UK.Rediscovery And Redevelopment
They looked to see if there were any physical representation of a locomotive they could use. In the Rail Museum in York, stood a British idol, The Flying Scotsman. Since they needed to reverse engineer the locomotive they didn’t want to take apart the original. Luckily the museum in its archive had the engineering drawings to build The Flying Scotsman. Using these and using knowledge of engineering, they were able to build a replica of The Flying Scotsman, but with differences. These differences were to have a hybrid train so that it could run using coal or electrical power. They devised a way to ensure that the train driver could switch between Coal powered to Electric at will, but would need to use whistles to ensure that the train’s boiler didn’t turn into a bomb. The purpose of reverse Engineering the locomotive was that The Flying Scotsman was at the time the fastest train is known. Could use coal power when not in cities, where the speed would be required but could change to electric while in cities to reduce speed and noise of the locomotive.Power Generation
The coal-powered part of the train works as a normal steam train would, with a fireman shovelling coal into the locomotive. The electric part uses the third rail system.Resource Limitations
As with all mechanical machines, there needs to be lubricant, to ensure that the machine runs correctly. Before The Great Rewind this was oil based, but due to The Great Rewind this can not be done due to the fact they do not have access to oil, so instead the lubricant is made from animal fat, most commonly lard but can be tallow. This lard and tallow can be produced from the Animal Husbandry Industry in Birdencaster.Usage
Unlike The Flying Scotsman, which only pulled passenger carriages the hybrid trains of The New World pulled freight carriages as well as passenger carriages.Passenger Trains
The Locomotive pulls nine carriages. The carriages consist of Six-passenger, one mail, one luggage and one guard carriages.Frieght Trains
The Locomotive pulls nine carriages which are made of six good, two mail, and one guard carriages.Loading and Unloading Trains
Passenger Trains
At a train station, the guard carriage has its hand brake on so that the train can’t roll. For passenger trains, the lone staff member who is from the guard carriage will then leave with a bucket of lard and quickly paint grease onto the mechanical parts of the locomotive. After doing this and before the train leaves they rush back to the guard carriage. While the train is at the station passengers, are welcome to embark and disembark from the train. The doors are non electric so need to be closed by the last person or someone who is still on the train.Freight Trains
As with the passenger train, the hand brake is put on. As this is a freight train there are two staff members instead of one. The first as before attends to the lubrication of the mechanical parts. The other is armed with a clipboard who looks at the station name or the segment they are in, in the case for Birdencaster. Looks at the clipboard and see which carriages need to be unloaded or loaded for that stop as before, just before the train departs the train’s good carriages are relocked. Both of the staff members of the guard carriage aboard in the guard carriage. While the train is at the station the goods carriages that are unlocked are loaded and unloaded by Crate Carriers. This can look like a hive of activity, people of a young age are told to stay clear of these busy operations. When the train is ready to depart the carriages are relocked.Downtime In The Guards Carriage
While the train is going along, the staff member with the clipboard ticks off the place they have done and writes in, where in the county or country the loaded cars are for. If for example, it is to export to another country. For example, the train is destined to terminate in Dover then the carriage is marked as “Foreign”. The other staff member, who was the one with the bucket of lard. Will put the bucket back in a place where it can't move such as a box that has been bolted down. If the staff member who does the spreading of lard is on their own they will go back to reading a book or something that can be done solely. If however, they are not on their own then they will continue with what they were doing with the other person such as playing a board game or cards. The member of staff with the bucket of lard in winter instead of putting it back in a box that is bolted to the floor puts it above a burner set on low to ensure that the lard stays to a consistency of paste rather than a hard lump. This burner is also bolted to the floor and is watched so that it or the lard above it doesn’t start fires.

What happens when it is cold outside? Lard is pretty solid when it gets colder. I'm curious to know what lubricant is used when lard is unable to be used.
James Woodwright
ok i will add a burner to make the lard less solid but not a liquid. Thanks for the comment!
James Woodwright
I have added your question point. Thanks for the pointer!
