Jorlen was secretly raised as a Remnant Operative by the shadowy organization known only as the Collective. He began his life under the tutelage of a Collective agent by the name of Cain Vadros, who had been posing as a Remnant Operative himself. Through the use of deception, the Collective planned to use Jorlen as a hidden sleeper agent to destroy the Remnant from within. This was to be accomplished through the use of a microchip that Cain Vadros was meant to activate once given the command. However, Cain had begun to see himself as a father to Jorlen, and therefore could not carry out his orders.
In the year 2717, Jorlen (now 24 years old) has reached the rank of Senior Operative within R.I.O, the Remnant Intelligence Office. Cain Vadros, the current Head of Operations and Jorlen's mentor, receives orders from newly elected Primus Natalis Kade to conduct a covert operation against a pirate informant located in Pantel. After the execution of his target, Jorlen discovers that the man was a Remnant Officer after finding his uniform in his closet. Upon further examination, it is revealed that Jorlen's target was paying pirates to attack Remnant supply lines. Jorlen, still feeling dismayed by his task, returns to Bastion to confront Cain - resulting in differentiating ideals in their organization, leading to Jorlen deserting the Remnant.
Behind the scenes the Collective originally planned to burn Jorlen as an asset, however Cain convinces the Collective that he may still be of use to their cause.
