Kobold
Kobolds are small, intelligent, bipedal reptiles with scaled skin, muzzled faces like a crocodile and sharp crests who prefer warm and damp environments. Many have latent magical abilities. Some pockets claim to be the descendants of dragons, others claim to be children of Midgeet, all of whom deny any responsibility.

Basic Information
Genetics and Reproduction
Kobolds lay eggs and incubate them in communal clutches. All hatchlings are treated as the children of the whole clan.
Dietary Needs and Habits
Kobolds are carnivores, preferring insects, birds, frogs, mammals, or fish. Some keep bats or pigeons the way orcs keep hogs.
Additional Information
Social Structure
The leaders of a kobold clan are the Chieftain and her Shaman partner. The kobold equivalent of marriage is a lasting agreement of shared companionship and responsibility that is revocable by either party. The Chieftain and the Shaman divide workload and child-rearing between the clan members, on a semi-rotating basis, to avoid boredom or favoritism.
Domestication
Left by their mother in the nest of a larger dragon, the first kobolds were assumed to be a servitor race, gifted by the gods, rather than a cuckoo scenario. This forced them to grow in the controlling and demanding environment of a dragon's lair and territory. Generally assumed to be lawful evil by nature, it was actually a learned pattern of behavior based on their environment. Even those clans outside of direct dragon control (most but not all in the current era) still tend toward lawful evil tendencies unless their environment or contacts teach them otherwise.
Geographic Origin and Distribution
Kobolds reside in subterranean cave networks and deep jungle. Individual clans are often insular.
Perception and Sensory Capabilities
Sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell, and many have magical sense and ability.
Civilization and Culture
Major Language Groups and Dialects
Due to their heritage and verbal storytelling, kobolds speak primarily Draconic.
Common Taboos
Leaving eggs unattended, killing members of your own clan, harming a dragon, and sleeping where you eat or defecate.
History
Kobolds breed quickly but lose a significant portion of their adult populations to war and smaller skirmishes over territory, minerals, and other resources. Other intelligent races including gnomes and humans have taken to blasting closed mining shafts if they are found to intersect with kobold mines or warrens. For this reason, kobolds are suspicious and aggressive when dealing with other races.
Genetic Descendants
Origin/Ancestry
Kobolds are actually the children of Midgeet, but not in the way they imagine. Midgeet had a short fling with a female fairy dragon, who laid the resulting eggs in the nest of a larger dragon.
Lifespan
40 years (including casualties of war) but can live past 150 years.
Average Height
3' 5"
Average Physique
Slender but muscular.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Most common colorings for scales and underlying skin are red or orange, although other colors occur naturally.
