The Mining Ghoul

"Across the marshlands lurks a ghost, or a ghoul as the wicked call him. This ghost roams these lands due an accident deep in the mines. His fellow set sparks to the dynamite that caused boulders to rain down on the poor worker from above. His co-worker's incompetence caused the innocent man's demise, therefore his soul vowed to cease these foolish decisions. The ghost now roams the coast, waiting to happen across a child. This spirit enters ones inner soul to reveal their truest selves. If it is revealed that you're a diligent worker, he rewards you with gold and jewels. If you're a lazy, incompetent worker, he takes a fraction of your energy in order to revive himself into the living world. This ghoul wanders with tattered mining gear and a rusted, worn, pickaxe. There's no sign of when the miner's spirit will visit. so it's best to keep on your best behavior when working." - Custos

Historical Basis

The myth was inspired after a miner was crushed to death from falling debris due to a dynamite explosion. Deaths like these that were caused by arrogance and foolishness were deemed a massive problem. Then, the myth was created by the mothers of Vindexian children in the city, so that incompetence was feared. The soul aspect of the tale derives from how the people of Caesellius Vindex view magic. It's very misconstrued, but the Vindexians do have an idea of what the Manipulative arts are. They believe in the soul and its purities; a soul can never lie as it's a person's truest form.

Spread

The myth was received mostly by children that lived by the coast or city. This is because the myth originally centered around a miner, which is a common career choice for those in that area. Eventually, it spread to farmhouses, and even to some Provector settlements.

Variations & Mutation

Some variations change the ghost's identity as a farmer or fisherman. Though the premise has remained the same.
