Cataclysm

One of the defining moments in 4 Corners history and an event that shaped their world- Cataclysm was an event that goes down in history as one of the greatest tragedies in written history.
A little over 500 years ago, The four elemental gods of 4 Corners; Ignea, Marus, Aereon, and Teras still enjoyed a direct connection between their worlds and this one. The people worshipped and revered this connection. They celebrated the arrivals of people and gifts from the other world into their own. And, on very special occasions this connection would allow that god to visit, guide, and watch over the people for a time before returning to their own world. Most of the gods loved their people, except for one.
Marus, the Sea God looked upon his people in disgust. Those of the Southern corner were violent, militaristic, avaricious, and overly prideful. War games and murder sources of enjoyment, there was a thriving slave trade, and everything in the Southern Corner was primed for them to conquer Crossroads, the central merchant city-state, as their own territory. What Marus saw was a reflection of himself, as all of these actions were from his own guidance, teaching his magics to the people and they were led to do all of these ugly deeds by his children, the Watertouched. Prideful and vain, Marus was horrified at looking at how much ugly was in the mirror, so the sea god did the only thing he knew in order to fix it; he washed the entire clean.
While many accounts say that it was one large tidal wave that crashed upon the shores of the Southern Corner, this is inaccurate; there were dozens. Marus brought the might of dozens of tidal waves upon the people, washing away forests, farms, people, and buildings. The salty floods afterward kept the ground soft and swamp-like so nothing could grow. Styrkar, the Corner's capital took the brunt of the destruction; an entire city completely turned to ruins. Everything was gone save for one building; Marus' grand temple which housed his gate. With no homes and no food, many of them tried to flee, but Marus was not done yet. To ensure that the deed was done, he summoned the rest of his magics and caused the Corner to plummet into a deep freeze; a winter which would last for 5 years. By the time Marus was done, only 6 human families of survivors remained.
When the other gods had seen what Marus had done, they looked on the acts in horror. The purpose of them being here was to rescue and keep these people safe, not to perform acts just as heinous as the great Chaos Beast they had slain but a number of centuries ago. It was decided that it was better to let the people rule and guide themselves. They could not risk allowing Marus, or any of them for that matter, to ever do something as devastating again. This event would later lead to the next great tragedy of the 4 Corners, Severance.
