Intro to The Foul

The World of Luminous is covered in the miasma of The Foul, there are few places that are not naturally covered by this dangerous mist. As one traverses the world it is common to see places where the thickness of the miasma varies.   Most people are terrified to leave their homes due to the thickness of the miasma around protected settlements. This thickness is the result of the protective crystals in these settlements pushing the miasma away. When pushed the miasma pushes back, the bigger the displacement the thicker the miasma.   Similarly, places like The Underdark or areas under certain effects carry a much thicker miasma as the lower elevation causes the mists to pool.

Manifestation

Adventurers traveling the wilds are exposed to these varying levels of The Foul daily. Each person faces a chance that their internal resistance to The Foul may falter and the infection will progress. There is a 20% chance in any environment, on any day, that a creature’s resistance to the foul may falter, if it does, roll a Con Save with the DC below for the environment the players are in. This value changes if the creature has a stronger or weaker constitution at the time. If a non-organic creature encounters the foul, they only roll to resist if the roll is lower than 10%. If a creature is weakened they may need to resist the foul at a 40% chance. Weakened constitution includes being under the effects of: the poisoned condition, any level of exhaustion, or under the effect of an ability score lowering effect.
  • A thin mist swirls around your footsteps, but does not carry enough strength to leave the ground as you lift your foot. DC 10
  • A noticeable haze covers the grounds in moving, shifting currents. The mists follow your steps, rising and falling as your feet leave the ground. DC 13
  • The wind stirs the mists in shifting, circling waves. You push through its sometimes obscuring height. DC 16
  • Dense purple mists obscure vision and limit visibility like a light fog. You cover your mouth with cloth and masks to help prevent inhalation. (Non-breathing creatures reduce infection chance to 10%) DC 18
  • Dense Miasma permeates the air. Breathing is hindered, you are hard pressed not to breath it in. (Non-breathing creatures reduce infection chance to 15%) DC 20
  • (Density outside of heavily warded cities) The Foul forms a Dense wall. You push your form through, holding your breath against the oppressive air. Foul responds violently to attempts to Abjure, attacking crystals with reactionary, instinctual spines. (Non-breathing creatures resist as breathing creatures) DC 25
Any Creature who Fails their Foul Resistance Check gains 1 point of Foul Infection.
