Roth Barsinog
Personality Characteristics
Vices & Personality flaws
Despite Roth's adamant and very public denouncement of all things magical, he was quietly trained in the dark arts of Valtarus as a young child by Chalron, the head mage at the regional school. Since teaching magic to children was forbidden, Chalron risked much with his tutorship, but believed Roth's natural ability was so great that it could not be ignored. Roth's apprenticeship took him far from his mentor and then he enlisted as a mercenary immediately thereafter, following the tradition of his bloodline. By the time Roth returned as a young warrior, Chalron had died under questionable circumstances involving a magical accident with a young protegee named Nalia. The increasing number of missing children in Valtarus correlated with her rise to power and the situation culmianted with her exile into the Valta Mountains and the prohibition of magic which was championed by Roth himself.
Social
Religious Views
Roth was a prominent leader and vehemently pushed for for the prohibition of all magic in the region. The predominant type of magic in Valtarus at the time was a primitive form of blood magic, which had already been a point of controversy due to the rising number of missing children and rumours that they had been harvested for ritual purposes. In more recent times, some have argued that Roth's opposition to magic was specific to this early blood magic and that the Council should reconsider the previous ruling in light of the crippling effect it has had on the development of Valtaran technology. However, there are numerous recordings of Roth denouncing all forms of magic, a view which was only strengthened by his experiences in the campaign against the Twin Cities.
