Neverwinter Stories: Heirs of Delzoun — Session 9

The Forge of Fury – Chapter Nine: Blood in the Glitterhame

General Summary

The orcs clutched their axes to the chest, reluctant to listen to the Great Ulfe's commands. A few times the Heirs tried to sway their hearts. While they had some results, they relented to their violent usurper. There was a brief, violent frenzy—dwarven hammers clashed with orcish axes. Reeking corpses of troglodytes were slug over the formations. In mere moments, any orc not critically wounded surrendered. Great Ulfe fled in the confusion, taking the human prisoners and leaving a cave bear as a parting gift. Although it tore into Orreft, the mighty beast fell too. There was no time to lose, So they pursued. Burdug chose to stay behind and oversee her warriors.
Hot on Ulfe's heels, our heroes caught up to and confronted him in a massive cavern. Its walls and ceiling were made of iridescent; they stood in the beautiful crystal caves the ruined bridge mentioned, Glitterhame. Great Ulfe was backed into a corner, but he refused to relinquish the humans. With a whistle, he sicked his dire wolves Vak and Thrag onto the dwarves and charged with a roar. Tordek and Orreft challenged him directly, Helga, Imbim, and Baldir fought the hounds, and Belnyss sniped from the shadows. Even though they were worn down and bloodied, they slew Vak and Thrag and surrounded the half-ogre. Defiantly, he struck Orreft with a near-fatal blow. Only because of Baldir's heroism and divine healing did the Muffinhead dwarf survive. Finally, with a mighty blow, Tordek stuffed his hammer into Ulfe's throat. The half-ogre choked to death on his own blood.
Winded and ragged, Orreft still knocking on death's door, the dwarves dragged themselves out of the Glitterhame with their rescued humans, bid Burdug goodbye, and ascended to the surface through an old orc-dug tunnel.

Rewards Granted

The adventurers took the unusual axe the Great Ulfe was wielding (later identified as a +1 greataxe crafted by Durgeddin) and the two chests in his possession. The chests contained 400 gold pieces, 1,600 silver, a potion of climbing, and a +1 rapier of elvish make.

Missions/Quests Completed

The dwarves successfully fulfilled the terms of their deal with the Bloodytooth Clan by slaying the Great Ulfe. Additionally, they rescued the human couple Courana and Geradil.

Character(s) interacted with

They continued cooperating with Burdug. After failing to convince the traitorous orcs to side with their mother instead of the usurper, the Heirs mocked the Great Ulfe while fighting and persuing him.

Notes

  • Orreft needed three days of recovery to heal from his injuries after being mauled by the brown bear and nearly killed by Great Ulfe twice.
  • Baldir's last-second save repaid the life debt he owed Orreft from their previous adventure.
