Typically a squadron of four to six is used when needed for the personal protection of an important elder. In times of warfare, they can make up to 4,000 men.

Battles require a lot of numbers to hold a line. Because of their few numbers yet lethal potential, they are trained in high mobility to strike where they are needed most to support a line.
If needed for security, they are to use their heightened senses to detect threats and strike first.

Eladrin elves purely make up this unit. It is purely because of the innate abilities within elves such as their heightened senses and ability to teleport short distances is why. Should an outsider manage to prove themselves capable of these core needs, they are given that promotion.
History
The eladrin always saw Elvarid as home and thus the Masters and Mistresses dubbed their bravest warriors as part of the homeland’s guard. Though, as the Necromantic War began churning in its volatility, the Elvarian Knights were then appointed with the specialized task of ensuring their appointed elder’s safety.
