Sova and the captain set out to find help from the indigenous northerners.

Sova was chosen to go due to her grasp of the Sitka language, which they might also know, and her overall experience working with foreign cultures. The captain felt it was his duty to seek help for his crew.   After finding help, they returned to The Nonesuch with sleds, and brought the rest of the crew to the northerners' camp.
