Kingdom of Aralia

75 years ago, chief Ohurkao of the Aralia Clan had a dream. For most of history, Dàni people had been disorganzied fishers that lift spread out across the southern coast. The mountains protected them from being absorbed into the Taalorang Empire, and they lived in peace. Ohurkao was not satisfied with this and so brought the rest of the clans under his control and formed the first kingdom of the Dàni people.

Political Geography

Aralia's core is in the west, at the three-pronged Levaebu Bay in the west, where their capital city of Nidaf sits on the peninsula across the bay from Taalora's Mangzmat City. This is the region that traditionally belonged to the Aralia Clan before unification. The kingdom then, in theory, extends all the way along the coast until the Lurun Mountains hit the sea, encompassing all the land occupied by Dàni people. In practice, their control and influence over the villages to the east gradually diminished and disappears entirely past Lake Fosua. It's hemmed in from the north by the mountains and from the south by the Southern Ocean.

Physical Geography

Aralia is a cool, wet region covered in pine trees and marshes. The coast is flat, frequently marshy, and home to sparse trees. Moving north, the ground gradually rises into the foothills of the mountains, and the dense forest of coniferous trees that covers the interior. It's known for being very green and occasionally called the Land of 1,000 Waterfalls thanks to how many small mountain streams flow through the rocky foothill region.

The peninsula is a bit higher and drier, with Nidaf built at the only possibly port on an coastline otherwise full of low cliffs.

Religion

Aralia's sharpest divide is religion. Traditional shamanism thrives in the east, while the west, which has close contact with Taalora, have mostly converted to Timilism. The Aralia Clan were some of the first to convert, and spreading the religion was part of uniting the other clans. The religion is strongly encouraged and you must be an adherent in order to hold government office, but those who cling to the old ways are not actively persecuted.

Structure

It's ruled by the clan rather than one family. The king or queen is the head of the clan, and when he or she dies, the clan members vote among themselves to choose the new leader. Aralia is a Scimitar Cat clan, and all government officials must also come from a Scimitar Cat clan.

Scimitar Cat clan chiefs have a large amount of autonomy in their traditional regions and send delegates to Nidaf to represent their interests before the king. Bear clans live side by side with Scimitar Cat clans, and are represented in the government by the the Scimitar Cats.

Bear clans are traditionally the leaders of religion, but there is less of a place for them in Timilism than in their traditional religion. In the east, where Timilism is rarer, the arrangement of Scimitar Cats leading the physical world and Bears leading the spiritual one is still running in harmony, but there is growing resentment among Bears in the west who feel they are second-class citizens.
