Lake Sateno

A message from the town council of Nikitye:
ATTENTION TRAVELLERS.
There is no monster in Lake Sateno. News you have heard about a monster is a HOAX.
Lake Sateno is PERFECTLY SAFE.
Repeat: NO SUCH THING AS SATENO MONSTER
Thank you.

Lake Sateno is a beautiful lake in northern Maloa, located in the Upper Maloa province. It's the lifeblood of Nikitye, providing fish, water, and tourist money from travellers who come to bathe in the cool, blessed water. The lake is famously deep; no one knows exactly how deep it gets in the centre, but it's impossible to see the bottom even on days when the water is relatively calm.   The lake is significant to Uyoyano, which holds that the water of the lake is holy. According to legend, the lake actually has no bottom, and it opens into the tunnels below the world where Sawaatil the Corrupter lurks. Sawaatil tunnelled through the earth to try to return to the surface, but Ban Kekuma sealed his tunnel by covering it in blessed water that burns his skin.   Water from the lake is therefore said to cure mild injuries and illnesses, give spiritual strength, and protect you from Sawaatil's influence. The church sells bottles of it throughout Maloa, though there are plenty of counterfeit bottles of "Holy Blessed Water Straight From Sateno" that were actually filled at the local well. The church is doing their best to crack down on this.

The Sateno Monster

In recent years, however, travellers to the lake have diminished thanks to stories of a fearsome monster lurking in its depths. The monster was first spotted about 50 years ago by some fishermen at twilight. Sightings have occurred sporadically over the years. The monster is said to resemble a giant fish, but with a face like a crocodile. It is covered in hard, armoured scales and has a long, sinewy body.
The government of Nikitye, the large town on the shore of the lake, adamantly denies its existence. All sights have been in low-light hours of twilight or dawn, and the most detailed ones are often from people who were drunk at the time and/or have no evidence to back up their claims.

A large tooth found on the shore said to have come from the monster is supposedly actually the front fang of a Scimitar Cat from Hosquerre. Still, there rumours persist and more than a few people are 100% convinced in the existence of Satenassi, as the monster is affectionately nicknamed by believers

Geography

Lake Sateno is a large lake the makes up part of the northern border of Maloa. The lake is fed by an underground river, or, if you subscribe to Uyoyano, it was placed by their god to seal the underworld. It's located in a low area just north of the Kuneef Ridge, and the ground continues to rise north and east of it to eventually form the highlands of central Kaabara.   It's surrounded by forest the Malo people call the Qupeqip Woods, but these woods are actually only the edge of the sprawling eastern Kaabara tropical woodland.
