Goblin

Goblins are typically family-centric, forming large close-knit communities. They enjoy building and tinkering, giving new life to the discarded items of other sapient species. As a result most family groups keep hoards of these "treasures," for use in their projects.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Goblins possess four primary limbs, two arms and two legs. They are small but dense, weighing more than they appear when compared to other species.   Their hair is typically darker shades of black and brown, turning gray as they age, although the hair itself is sparce and only visible in close proximity to the goblin.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Goblins are voracious omnivores, frequently consuming items which would make most other sapient races sick. This is a result of their hyper metabolism, requiring many small meals throughout the day but also allowing them to break down many poisons and even resist many illnesses if the carrier was ingested rather than obtained through other means.   Goblins also cannot become drunk and are not susceptible to alcohol poisoning. They have developed their own drinks which can entice the goblin equivalent of these effects. Consumption of these drinks by non-goblins is not recommended.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Goblins are a communal species, with most living in extended family groups and sharing their hoards of potential project treasures. Each member of the household contributes to the needs of that household including caring for the children. Frequently the oldest goblins within the family group will watch after the young while the youngest will gather and collect items for the hoard. Those in the middle, typically the parents of the children, will provide for the basic needs of their group such as food, water, shelter, and protection.

Average Intelligence

While most goblins would not be considered anywhere close to book smart they do have an innate cleverness about them. Goblins are talented tinkerers, able to combine the discarded items of others into items and structures and, for particularly talented goblins, machines. This takes great practice to master and most goblins are loath to discard anything, even from failed past projects, lest they need it for a new project. As a result they have acquired a reputation as avid hoarders.

Now I'm curious! Being as they are avid tinkerers, and never discard anything, how do they record their inventions? Their tinkering? Their history? Is it an oral tradition? Or do they use books?   If books, how many treasure hoards have a library section made up of cobbled-together books, maybe even a few are discarded books from other peoples?

As always, many thanks for your comments! These are all great questions that I have been avoiding answering because I needed some space to think about them.   And now that things have been slowing down here again... There are so many fun ways to answer these questions, and now I am leaning towards adding goblin ethnicities because making them use all the same ones is boring. ;) So this will take a bit to answer but I have added to my To Do List here.   Your questions always make more "work" for me and I love it, and your insights. Many thanks, as always.
